Best Practices Form

Instructions: Submit this form as a separate attachment with your completed Program Review. Programs often do something particularly well; usually they have learned through assessment—sometimes trial and error—what solves a problem or makes their programs work so well. These are often called Best Practices and can help others. Please share the practices your program has found to be effective. The contact information lets others know whom to contact for more information. For examples of Best Practices visit the Program Review Committee’s website.

Best Practice(s):
The Challenge
The Kern County labor market has a high demand and pays a wage differential for welders. The main Bakersfield College campus is maxed out on its space to expand its welding certification program. The Delano Joint Union High School District had an under resourced welding program with an insufficient number of welding stations to serve a full high school class. The Bakersfield College Delano Center did not have space to establish a full welding lab either. During the AB86 planning process, the Bakersfield College Delano Center and the Delano Joint Union High School District identified this as a high priority need.
The Solution
The AB86 planning process included the establishment of a welding lab to serve a full high school / college class, co-located at the high school, and available to high school students during the day and adult students in the evening. The Bakersfield College main campus donated equipment to the project to establish 10 welding booths, 19 welders and ancillary equipment, including air filtration systems, and consumable gases and rods. High school students will be able to take two courses (Welding B1A and B1B) and get college credit. The remaining four (4) welding certificate courses can be completed in a year and will be available at the Delano high school location.
