Pierre Paul Pilote - # 3 - Chicago Black Hawks

One of the most feared defenseman in NHL history, Pierre Pilote was born in 1931 in Kénogami, Québec. Amazingly, he did not play organized hockey until he was a 17 yr. old living with his family in Fort Erie, Ont. After playing men’s industrial hockey he played one year for the Niagara Falls Jr. ‘B” Cataracts, two years for the St. Catherine’s Jr. “A” Teepees.

In the fall of 1952, he began playing professionally for the AHL Buffalo Bisons where spent the next four years, making the First All-Star team in his last year. After playing 20 games of call-up duty for the Chicago Blacks Hawks in the 1955-56 season, he joined the Hawks permanently the following season and would be joined by such co-stars, as Elmer Vasko, Bobby Hull, Stan Makita, Eric Nesterenko and Glenn Hall.

Considered small for a defenseman, the 5’10 ” 165 lb Pilote was a fierce body checker who didn’t hesitate to play it rough and tough. His most potent skill however was jumping on the attack with his teammates and in 1961, when the Black Hawks won the Stanley Cup, Pierre was the leading point getter in the playoffs. Had there been a Conn Smythe Trophy for the NHL playoffs MVP in 1961, the award surley would have been won by Pilote, so stated a recent edition of The Hockey News.

Pierre’s defensive skills won him the James Norris Trophy as the NHL’s Best defenseman in 1963, 1963 and 1965. He would be voted to the First All-Star team in 1963, 1964, 1965 1966 1967.He would make the Second Team in 1960, 1961 and 1962. He set an All-time point record for defenseman with 498 points, achieved in 890 games, before he retired in 1969.

Pierre was one of six hockey players honoured with a postage stamp by Canada Post in 2006. His #3 was retired by the Chicago Black Hawks in November of 2008. He is presently working on his biography, “Full Tilt”, with former SAWCHUK biographer David Dupuis and SIHR member Waxy Gregoire. It is expected to be released next year.
