PROF E SLABBERT
Prof Slabbert is an associate professor at North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus). She specialises in the social impact of tourism, tourism marketing communication, event management and tourism management. She has written several chapters on cultural tourism, communication and tourism marketing issues. She also has practical experience working for the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (FEDHASA). At the SAESBA-Conference in 2001 she received the best presenters’ award.
She is currently one of the senior researchers in the School of Business Management and the Niche for the Socio-Economic impact of Tourism which focus on various aspects of tourism management.Prof Slabbert is also a board member of the Southern African Institute for Management Scientists, Heritage Potchefstroom, and the Potchefstroom Tourism Association. She is referee for the National Research Foundation (NRF), the Southern Africa Business Review and the South African Journal for Research in Sport, Physical Education and Recreation.
She plays an active role in the School of Business Management where she is the academic programme leader for Tourism Management. This involves the management of academic issues pertaining to Tourism, programme development and alignment. She has also been a member of the Education Committee of the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences until 2007. She received an Excellence in Teaching Award in 2003 as well as 2007 and also received the highest score for teaching in the Faculty. She also assists in developing the tourism programme in general, the marketing of the programme and serves as faculty advisor.
After the completion of her PhD she focused on acquiring research funds awarded to her by the National Research Foundation for analysing the social impacts of events in South Africa (2007-2010). Besides her own research she is a project leader within the Niche-area focusing on the social impact of tourism especially at arts festivals and national parks. This is the only Research Niche area for Tourism in South Africa and receives funding from the National Research Foundation.
She started supervising post-graduate students in 2005 as co-supervisor, and since 2006 as supervisor. From 2005 15 of her students completed their studies with success. Currently she is the supervisor of 4 Master’s degree, 8 MTech and 8 PhD students. She is an external promoter for the MTech Students at the Vaal University of Technology. Prof Slabbert has supervised over 40 Honours degree dissertations since 2002. She has presented 13 papers international conference papers, 6 national conference papers, written (with other authors or as sole author) 3 books, 10 chapters in books, 11 articles, 34 research reports and 5 in-service training manuals.
