BIR/GE Radiation Safety Travel Award

Application Guidelines

Purpose

To allow the recipient to travel to a radiation safety conference of their choice to present their work (in the form of a presentation or poster).

Amount

The BIR will provide funding for the successful recipient to travel to the relevant conference to present their work.

-  BIR will provide the funding of no more than £1000 for the successful recipient to travel to the chosen conference to present their work.

Eligibility

-  In order to meet eligibility requirements, applicants must meet the following,

o  Bea qualified radiologist, radiographer, radiation oncologist, or a medical physicist or equivalent.

o  Be a BIR member with no outstanding membership dues

-  Applicant must design a new resource/tool to improve radiation protection in the health service. This may be innovative software or a novel use of new technologies. It could consist of a device or object to warn, protect or assess protection provided. It could be a new concept to challenge or enhance current thinking on radiation safety.

-  Applicant to include details of the conference where they intend to present their work.

Funding Criteria

1.  Preference will be given to applications that have direct relevance to the mission of the BIR.

2.  The completed application, including details of the resource or tool will be judged on the following criteria;

a.  Actual stated impact on clinical radiation protection practice

b.  Novelty

c.  Potential importance for the radiation safety of staff and/or patients

Conditions

1.  Record of expenditure

The BIR will recompense the successful applicant against receipts of expenditure for conference registration and necessary travel and accommodation.

2.  Conference presentations/ publications

The research must be submitted following the congress to a relevant BJR journal for consideration for publication.

3.  The winner must submit a written report to the BIR on their experience at the conference.

4.  Acknowledgement

The British Institute of Radiology must be acknowledged as a funding source in the conference presentation or poster and in any subsequent publication.

Scoring Guidelines

Selection Criteria/Review Process

·  BIR members with expertise in the area will be invited to review the application for scientific merit and appropriateness for funding.

·  Final decisions will be subject to the approval of the Awards and Prizes Committee, with advice from the Radiation Safety SIG.

·  GE Healthcare will not be part of the decision-making process for the award.

The following guidelines will be applied in the review process:

1.  Actual Impact (10 points):

•  Has the impact been assessed?

•  Are the pre- and post-implementation metrics appropriate?

•  Is their analysis valid?

•  How big is the impact?

2.  Novelty (10 points):

•  Has the author done a sufficient literature search?

•  Is their work a copy/implementation of their idea or someone else’s

3. Importance (10 points):

•  Is their idea able to be rolled out to other centers?

•  Will it improve practice generally or is it a local niche improvement?
