Discussion with Dr Benson
Dr Benson had a last minute opening in his calendar and was able to attend the CIPAC meeting. We took this opportunity to back brief him on our previous discussion with MrsKahle and Mr Nichols concerning the HS Education Specifications effort.
Dr Benson’s points:
- What should the next SCPS HS look like?
- Embraced by the community
- Facilities that support collaboration between students, teachers
- Design that facilitates great teaching and learning without impeding progress
- Design that increases cognitive demand
- A space that becomes part of the learning, creative, critical thinking experience
- Incorporate missed opportunities (libraries and fields)
- Maker spaces with purpose
- Balance of equipping all teaching environments with parity in attention to academics and extracurricular (physics lab equipment, technology lab equipment, athletic program equipment, etc)
- Robust technical infrastructure with an eye towards self sufficiency
- Flexible, practical shared space
- Flexible, practical furniture to complement the shared spaces
- Providing an environment inclusive of all levels of learners: advanced, middle, and challenged
- Visit Albemarle High Schools – Matt Haas
- Tour Brooke Point and Stafford High libraries for contrast
- Areas to be mindful of or avoid?
- Narrowly specialized spaces (ambulances in classrooms)
- Relying too heavily on traditional design
- Bleeding edge, gimmicky products/designs that don’t provide the benefit comparable to the cost or are too specific in their use
- Program replication across all HS’s solely in the name of HS Parity
- Stakeholders to engage:
- Carrie Neely – ES Programs Director, was instrumental in developing the C5W Portrait of a Graduate – The CIPAC should get on her schedule next
- Business Leadership – Rappahannock Area Chamber of Commerce in Fredericksburg
- Teacher Leaders – Teachers of the Year, IB Coordinators
- Parent and Teacher Advisory Councils
- Surveys:
- Graduating Seniors
- Freshman Class
- Resonating Points of Persuasion:
- SCPS HS Ed Specs and design are obsolete
- Need to prepare our middle group for all opportunities whether that college or career is the next step after graduation
- Consider alternative commercial sites to provide relief for overcrowding forecasts
- Next steps for CIPAC:
- Get on Carrie Neely’s schedule
- Devise/Collaborate with other efforts on Graduating Senior survey
- Devise/Collaborate with other efforts on Freshman Class survey
- Coordinate with Dr Benson for speaking points to highlight during School Board brief
- Request student and citizen nominations from School Board members for CIPAC
- Consider discussing activities during School Board Work Session
