Monday Project Read 9:00-10:30---Unit 14 Lesson 1: Skill: short u

Class will discuss vowels in the alphabet and that vowels are important because every word must have a vowel.

We will be studying the short vowel in this lesson.

Teacher will provide the spelling and sound for short u and it is heard in the word up.

Teacher will pretend to have an umbrella and discuss the handle being shaped like a u. The word umbrella starts with short u and when I push it up I say /u/. Teacher pretends to push the umbrella open and students pretend they are holding an umbrella (fist on top of fist). Pop thumb up (pretending to unlock umbrella). Lift thumb up in the air saying /u/ (pretending to open umbrella).

Students will skywrite short u /u/ 3times.

Teacher will place worksheet 14-5 under the document camera. Students will practice reading short u words 2 times, finger blending and tap and sweep. Vocabulary of the words will be discussed as needed. This worksheet will be sent home for reading homework.

Teacher will pass out worksheet 14-7. Students will fill in missing vowels in given words. Teacher will say the word, use it in sentence, and toss out the word to students. Students will catch the word and finger blend before writing. Students will take this sheet home to practice rereading.

Teacher will place the story, “Brad’s Hut” under the document camera. Students will practice reading and discussing the story. This story will be sent home for reading homework.

Lesson 2: Red words Mr., Mrs.

Class will review all red words learned thus far when teacher places each word from red word stack of word cards under the document camera. Students will arm tap and say each word posted.

Then teacher will post the word Mr. and Mrs. under the document camera. Tell students Mr. stands for the word mister and is an abbreviation. It starts with the first letter of mister and ends with the last letter. To show it’s an abbreviation, it ends with a period.

Mrs. is also an abbreviation that means a married lady. It also ends with a period because it is an abbreviation.

Students will arm tap and sweep both words 3 times each on arm.

Teacher will pass out worksheet 14-13. Students will read each given sentence and choose the correct red word(s) that make sense in the sentence. This worksheet will be sent home for reading homework.

Teacher will place the story, “Bud’s Truck” under the document camera. Students will practice reading and discussing the story. This story will be sent home for reading homework.

Teacher will leave the story up while students complete a short comprehension quiz over the story. After teacher takes up the quizzes, students will use the story to discuss what answers that they should have marked on the quiz.

Students will complete a Unit 14 assessment over short u and red words Mr. and Mrs.
