I.  Course Overview

This is a course for students with little or no previous formal guitar training. Students will learn to read music, play melodies, and chords. In this course students will develop an appreciation for important composers and styles of music, through listening and performance. Successful completion of this class will require class participation, written and performance tests, homework, projects, and practice outside of the classroom.

II.  Objectives:

-  Proper care of the guitar.

-  Demonstration of correct posture.

-  Learn how to properly tune the guitar.

-  Interpret musical terms and symbols.

-  Memorization of 30 open chords, and basic chord accompaniment.

-  Learn notes and scales in first position of the guitar with correct fingerings.

-  Learn and develop music reading of rhythm and notation.

-  An appreciation of various styles and periods of music.

-  Learn melodies from music text and additional resources.

-  The development of a high quality guitar tone.

III.  Rules:

1.  RESPECT! Students will exhibit respect for the teacher and classmates in the guitar room.

2.  Physical violence and inappropriate language will not be tolerated.

3.  Students are expected to be in class on time with a fully functioning instrument. Absences and lateness will result in a lower grade.

4.  You are responsible for your own instrument; please don’t use another students instrument.

5.  All school rules and guidelines apply in this classroom. Please refer to student handbook.

Consequences:

1.  Warning.

2.  No participation credit

3. Teacher Conference.

4.  Teacher Detention.

5.  Conference with Dean/Counselor/Teacher

6.  Incident Referral

7.  Conference with Parent/Dean/Counselor/Teacher

8.  Removal from class.

-All consequences after step 2 will result in a parent notification.

-Steps in the consequences will be skipped based on severity of your actions.

IV.  Grading

Participation, homework, care of guitar- 40%

Playing Tests- 30%

Written Tests- 15%

Projects, evaluations/critique-15%
