Role Overview:
At Data61 we bring together exceptional people from research and industry to create an ICT research Centre of Excellence in Australia. The Advanced Data Analytics in Transport (ADAIT) is a prestigious research and development team of Data61. The ADAIT team resides in the Analytics Program at Data61, one of the Top 5 world-leading research groups in its league.
The team has recently embarked on a Transport for NSW funded innovation program to develop a transport data analytics platform (referred to as the ADAIT Platform) for urban transport management. The ADAIT Platform aims to break the fragmented data view of the urban transport system, and establish an integrate data management and analytic capability. The platform is intended to provide analytics-as-a-service to end-users and capable of leveraging distributed data storage and cloud computing facilities. The Software Engineer – Data Transport Analytics will work within the ADAIT team to contribute to research in transport data analytics and commercial project delivery by applying their expertise in engineering and software coding, and writing scalable, high performance, production quality code.
Duties and Key Result Areas:
·  Design and code software modules for a data analytics platform. (Primarily back-end services, though some flexibility in contributing to front-end development will be required).
·  Review security and quality of software.
·  Write and maintain tests.
·  Help deliver the analytics platform.
·  Communicate effectively and respectfully in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
·  Work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team to undertake independent scientific investigations and carry out associated tasks under the guidance of more senior Research Scientists/Engineers.
·  Under the guidance of Senior Research Scientists/ Engineers, work collaboratively and honestly with internal and external colleagues, clients and partners to help define and satisfy objectives for small to medium research projects.
·  Assist in leading small research projects, including the negotiation of resource requirements.
·  Provide coaching and on-the-job training to technical staff and students to ensure experiments are established in accordance with research design.
·  Other duties as directed.
Selection Criteria:

Pre-Requisites:
·  Relevant tertiary degree (e.g. computer science, physics or mathematics), or equivalent work experience;
Essential Criteria:
1.  Solid engineering and software coding skills, with experience writing scalable, high performance, production quality code.
2.  Proficiency in Python, Java, C++ or equivalent.
3.  Relational and NoSQL database experience: PostgreSQL, MySQL.
4.  Understanding of data science and Machine Learning techniques.
5.  DevOps mindset and project automation experience including Linux containers, microservices architecture, continuous delivery to Amazon Web Services, real-time service monitoring.
6.  Big Data experience in Cassandra, Kafka, Spark and Hadoop.
7.  The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary and carry out independent individual research, to achieve organisational goals.
8.  A record of science innovation and creativity plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
9.  Demonstrated ability to allocate activities, directs tasks and manage resources to meet objectives. Provide coaching and on the job training, recognise and supports staff achievements and foster open communication in the team.
Desirable Criteria:
·  Familiarity with software development life cycles, and building reusable and extensible commercial products.
To be appointable to this position you must also demonstrate the following capabilities:
1.  Communication: Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to publish research results, prepare reports and present the results of scientific investigations at national and international conferences and stakeholder meetings.
2.  Publications: A solid record of publication in quality, peer reviewed journals.
3.  Behaviours: A history of professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes in a collaborative environment.
