ENG 4210Short Assignment #4 (Making Connections)
Length: no more than 500 words
DEADLINE:Wednesday, November 2
POST TO THE COURSE BLOG by midnight.
For this assignment, you’ll write about a connection you see between The Castle of Otranto and our supplementary readings on the sublime. I recommend sticking to the novel and just one of the supplementary texts, but you may use more than one if you have a clear idea for doing so.
What you’re working on here is drawing out connections between primary sources. The connection shouldn’t just be obvious but should take a bit of thought. How did reading one of the supplementary sources help you understand the novel better? Or how did one of the sources raise a question about the novel for you that you would like to explore a bit? If you post after Wednesday’s class, you must go beyond what we discuss in class. This post should reflect your original thinking.
As always, be as precise as possible, trying to communicate your thinking clearly to your reader. Quote accurately and give page numbers. No need for an intro and conclusion. This is a short post and should focus on the specificity of your connection, not generalizations.
Along with your post, you must include an image that illustrates your post in some way. You can be creative here! The image needn’t be from the eighteenth century, and it doesn’t have to be literal. However, you must identify the image in a caption, telling your readers where you found it and what it depicts (even if the answer to “what” is abstract or creative).
To post on the course blog:
1) First, log in to our course blog, then go to the dashboard (click on the name of the course blog in the black bar across the top, then choose “dashboard” from the dropdown menu).
2) On the left sidebar of the dashboard, choose “posts” then “add new.” This will give you the field to write your post.
3) Give your post a title that reflects your response.
4) Either write your post in the main field or paste it in from Word or elsewhere. If you paste, check the formatting to make sure everything looks okay. You’ll see that there’s a word counter at the bottom of the field. You can save your post as you go by clicking “save draft” on the right sidebar.
5) Click “Add Media” above the main field to add an image. You can either upload a file you already have or click “Insert from URL” on the sidebar to insert an image from a link from the web. When you paste in the URL, a field will appear below for your caption. Describe the image here and say where you got it from.
6) When you’re done, click the blue “publish” button on the right sidebar. You can view your post and check that it looks okay. Edit it if necessary.
