1. Supporting Statement - Kim Shutler-Jones (The Cellar Trust)
I have been the CEO at The Cellar Trust for just over 2 years.
I have been temporarily Chairing the Mental Health Providers Forum, having worked closely with the CCG and CNet to establish it has part of the VCS Assembly Structure. I did this because I am really passionate about strong VCS representation, and ensuring that we have a strong voice – particularly during challenging times.
The Mental Wellbeing Strategy was developed in a positive and inclusive manner but we must make sure that, through this forum, we continue to influence the development and implementation of the Action Plans. This, of course, will include drawing on our strengths around engaging with the communities and people we support – and ensuring ongoing dialogue and feedback.
I was the VCS representative on the Mental Wellbeing Strategy Programme Board, and worked hard to
ensure that the views of the VCS (as well as some of the challenges we face) were reflected in the document. I
am also the Deputy VCS representative on the Mental Health Joint Commissioning Board, and the VCS representative on the A&E Delivery Board.
My professional background is in Organisational Development and Communications. Previous to my move to the VCS, I have spent my career in the public sector which makes me well placed to understand how to work across the VCS, NHS and local authority. I have an Msc in Leadership and am Institute of Leadership and Management qualified Coach. I was also Vice-Chair on the Board of Leeds Women’s Aid for 4 years.
2. Supporting Statement – Dale Robinson (Horton Housing)
3. Supporting Statement – Ishtiaq Ahmed (Sharing Voices Bradford)
I have nearly 20 years’ experience of working in the community development sector with roles ranging from Community Development Officer, Housing Officer, Daycentre Manager and Community Development Manager (mental health). The majority of my employment history reflects upon building vibrant, healthy, educated, tolerant and cohesive communities and to help facilitate change by working closely with community/government service providers.
I have worked closely with individuals, families and groups in socially or financially deprived areas. And provided leadership through my current role as a community Development Manager
at Sharing Voices and an (ex) elected member of the Council (Bradford) and brought local people together to make changes and tackle social inequality. I helped people develop the skills needed to eventually run their own community groups.
My work typically includes:
· finding out about the community's needs, problems and barriers
· making sure that local people have their say
· developing new opportunities and monitoring existing projects
· helping to raise public awareness about community issues
· encouraging local people to take action
· building links with other groups and agencies
· raising funds
· recruiting and training staff and volunteers
· planning meetings and events
· managing budgets
· helping groups to settle differences of opinion on local issues
· doing any necessary administration work
As an experienced Black and Minority Ethnic Community Development Manager I have worked with and supported communities including the Black and minority ethnic (BME) voluntary sector, to help build capacity within them, and ensure the views of the minority communities are taken into account by the statutory sector during planning and delivery of services. Also it is my role to liaise and network with various BME groups and individuals across the Bradford district, undertaking a multi-agency approach and network with all relevant organisations to deliver a high quality service. In addition to raising awareness of mental health issues and making psychiatry and mental health services more accessible. I provide information, signpost and enable individuals to have a greater say in their treatment. Community Development is integral to improving mental health services so that they can meet the needs of ethnic minority groups effectively.
As an elected Councillor I was a member of the Health and Social care Overview and scrutiny Committee, I contributed to developing person-centred services by holding health and social care services to account on the scrutiny committees and influencing service improvement in the public interest. I have acted across the whole health economy, using pathways of care to hear views from across the system, examine priorities and funding decisions, tackle inequalities and identify opportunities for integrating services. The power of scrutiny is broader than just NHS services and enables me as a councillor to consider services that impact on the wider determinants of health, including those delivered by local authorities. Through this wider work, as a councillor I have influenced health and social care improvement and worked towards reducing health inequalities. I have also moved motions in the Council on a range of issues effecting local communities backed up by evidence.
