Prof. Dr. Gerrit de Leeuwreceived his PhD from the Univ of Amsterdam (Faculty of Mathematics and Physics) I 1981. He worked at TNO since 1980, had a sabattical as an NRC Senior Research Associate at the Dept. of Meteorology of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey (CA, USA). He was a Visiting Prof. at the Univ. of Sunderland (1999-2001) and at the Univ. of Leeds (2001-2006). He is a full Professor in the field of Satellite Remote Sensing of Aerosol Physical and Optical Properties at the University of Helsinki and at the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) since 1 January 2007. He leads the group on Atmospheric Radiation of the Climate Change Unit at FMI (15 people, incl. 7 PhD students), Supervised 5 PhD’s.He has (co-) authored ca. 120 peer reviewed articles in the fields of aerosols, remote sensing and ocean-atmosphere interaction and co-edited a book on ‘Aerosol Remote Sensing over Land’. He has participated as PI in 22 EU projects (3 as coordinator), often as Activity or WP leader, 13 ESA projects (2 as coordinator and in Aerosol-cci as science co-leader), and many other national or international research projects.
