AP SPANISH LANGUAGEI. Lugo, KHS

SUMMARY OF COURSE:

The AP Spanish Language course at Killeen High School is conducted solely in Spanish. Students practice the target language frequently with the teacher and their peers. The main objective of the course is to develop students' communicative skills in Spanish at a high level. It is expected that students understand and produce oral and writing skills equal to the ones used in a second-year college level course. AP Spanish Language students must have a strong background in Spanish, received during their first years of studying the targeted language. They should be highly motivated and interested enough to allocate the required time to be successful in this course. These students should be responsible to schedule time to complete a significant amount of out-of-class listening, speaking, reading and writing assignments.

Students are expected to:

·  Use Spanish in every aspect of the classroom setting.

·  Comprehend conversations, lectures, oral presentations,
newspapers, letters, instructions, Internet articles, and
short stories in Spanish.

·  Read and write broadly in Spanish.

·  Express orally by persuading, convincing, arguing, inquiring,
and describing.

·  Become proficient in language skills: listening comprehension,
speaking, reading and writing

·  Familiarize with the different Spanish and Latin American cultures through experiences in and out of the classroom.

·  Express well in an array of styles, using diverse strategies for different audiences.

·  Grow to be proficient in the capacity of using Spanish in everyday situations.

TEACHING STRATEGIES

Several forms and methodologies of instruction are used in this course. The use of consistent lessons that balance grammar and communication are used during the school year. The format of these lessons allows students to learn and review grammar rules using the thematic vocabulary they need to participate in communicative situations. Communication is the goal for oral presentations. Consistent placement of features and strategies help students to recognize the patterns and easily comprehend what is learned. Students listen to lectures and other oral narratives in Spanish and respond correctly to oral and/or written questions on the material. Students are expected to improvise orally, based on a series of visual cues. Oral presentations are given on a prepared topic, using notes. There are class discussions in Spanish based on reading materials. Students read short stories, articles, essays, and poetry and respond to oral and written questions on the material. Oral and written summaries are prepared based on lectures, films, news, and reading passages. Students write 200- 250 word compositions and essays on given prompts that demonstrate organization, grammatical accuracy, breadth of vocabulary and idioms, and stylistic quality. (C2)
