DEPUTY CHIEF ELECTRICIAN

Purpose

To assist the Chief Electrician in managing the electricalaspects of the Shaftesbury Theatrewhich includesmanaging theresident electrics team, production related staff, general building matters, production related matters and relationships with the producers and their various agents and sub-contractors. The postholder reports to the Chief Electrician. They are expected to keep the Chief Electrician fully informed of all matters and to deputise for them in their absence. Their line manager is the Chief Electrician.

The Electrics department has a critical role in representing the Company to both producers and those who hire the Theatre for other functions. It is often the first practical contact that these individuals and companies have with the Theatre and thus the Electrics team has an important role in representing the Theatre.

Duties

  • To assist in providing a first class level of electrical services on the stage and throughout theShaftesbury Theatre
  • To work in close liaison with the Chief Electrician in managing and delivering the requirements of each production or event hire and their respective producers, providing informed and accurate information at all times.
  • To assist in devising, reviewing and operating the Electrics department’s operational procedures to ensure that they are efficient and effective at all times.
  • To assist the Chief Electrician in managing the Electrics team, taking delegated responsibility as appropriate. Assisting in the line management oftheElectrics staff in respect of all matters, undertaking appraisals and working on programmes of change and improvement as appropriate.
  • To assist the Chief Electrician in ensuring effective staff levels within agreed budgets and in accordance with the needs of each production.
  • To assist in managing all electrical equipment to ensure the efficient and safe operation. Ensuring adherence to operational procedures, effective routine maintenance, cleaning and implementation of any agreed programme of replacement.
  • To work in conjunction with the Chief Electrician to manage the electrical requirements of the entire building.
  • To ensure that all activities are carried out to the highest standard and comply with the terms of the Theatre License and any other legislative requirements.
  • To manage delegated budgets within approved levels.
  • To assist in maintaining the department’s accurate financial records and controls to the satisfaction of the Financial Controller. This shall include, but not be limited to, purchase order systems, petty cash and timesheets.
  • To assist in maintaining adequate stocks of all departmental hardware and supplies for the building.
  • Tocontribute to the department’s awareness of technical developments and their suitability to the Theatre through product information, attending trade shows etc.
  • To work on any special project as identified by the Chief Electrician.
  • To support Theatre of Comedy Company’s communication objectives by sharing information with colleagues as appropriate whilst respecting confidentiality so that you and your colleagues have all the information you need to perform your duties effectively.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Previous experienceof electrical maintenance and installation.
  • Numerically literate
  • The ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Appropriate electricalqualifications, BS 7671 17thEdition, NVQ level 3 or equivalent.
  • Detailed understanding of electrical regulations, the Electricity at Work Act and premises licensing regulations.
  • A thorough understanding and working knowledge of theatre electricaland sound equipment
  • The ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Computer literate (Microsoft Office)
  • The ability to work under pressure
  • A flexible attitude to working patterns

Desirable

  • Educated to A level or equivalent
  • A thorough understanding and working knowledge of theatre electrical and sound equipment
  • Knowledge and/or qualifications in:
  • Rigging
  • Manual Handling
  • Working at height
