LESSON 1

CONCEPT NAME: Analysis Paralysis

Definition of category;

Analysis Paralysis is the process of over analyzing situations in your life by being caught up in negative thinking about past, or future events.

Example that fits in the category:

Susan spoke to Mary as she entered the work unit this morning. However, Mary did not speak back to her. Susan starts thinking that Mary does not like her, that Mary must be angry at her, Mary is stuck-up since she never speaks, and on and on and on.

Nonexample that does not fit in the category

Debbie spoke to Mary as she entered the work unit this morning. However, Mary did not speak back to her. Debbie says to herself, that Mary must have been too busy to hear her. She will make a point to greet Mary later in the day.

Borderline example that is close to the edge of the category:

Susan spoke to Mary as she entered the work unit this morning. However, Mary did not speak back to her. Susan says to herself that Mary never speaks to her. Perhaps Mary does not like her. She will find a way to talk to Mary and let Mary know how she feels when Mary does not speak to her.

OBJECTIVE:

Given new written examples and non-examples of active voice, such as

Theresa has many errands to run today. It will probably take 5 hours of her Saturday to complete the errands. When Theresa wakes up on Saturday she remembers all of the errand that she has to run today. She says “I have so much to do today. How will I ever get it all done? Why is it that everyone else gets to enjoy there Saturday, and I am always stuck running a lot of errands? I never have anytime to myself on the weekend. My life is such a mess. When will I ever get to rest?”

Patricia has a lot of errands to run today. It will take her about five hours to complete them. When she wakes up in the morning, she makes a mental list of all of the errands that she has to make. She reminds herself that it will require most of her day. She arranges the day so that she can run the errands and find time to rest later in the day. She also asks her husband if they can split some of the errands since, a couple of the places that she has to go is on his way to the golf course. After reviewing her plans, she is satisfied that she has time to do the errands and enjoy her Saturday just like the rest of the family.

According to this definition:

Here is a new example:

John has a son in middle school. Yesterday, at work he received a call from his son’s teacher asking him he planned to attend the parent teacher conferences the next day. John responded affirmatively. The teacher told John that he had something important to tell hem about his son. During the night John wakes up and remembers the phone call. He starts wondering why the teacher wants to talk to him about his son. He says “Why did he call me, I always attend the conferences? Has my son done something wrong? I wonder what he did to screw up this time? This is so embarrassing. My son is such a screw up, I wish he would hurry up and grow up.
