Chapter 10 Design, Processes and Drawing

Suggested Answers for Review Questions

1.  List the three important phases in the manufacturing process.

(1)  product design

(2)  selection of raw materials

(3)  selection of manufacturing processes.

2.  Define concurrent engineering and explain how it can be used to enhance the design and manufacturing process.

Concurrent engineering is the integration of the design and manufacturing processes. Using this process, reduces the time from design to production, changes are made as designing identifies them. Engineering and production costs are kept to a minimum.

3.  Explain the benefits of rapid prototyping.

Rapid prototyping is used to speed up the manufacturing process. In the past, prototyping may take as long as six months. Using rapid prototyping, design is sent directly to the rapid prototyping production, and taking only a few days or at the most a couple of weeks. This greatly reduces the cost of production.

4.  List four types of material used in manufacturing today.

Any four of the following:

Ferrous metals

Nonferrous metals

Plastics, ceramics

Composite materials

Nanomaterials

5.  List the five broad categories of manufacturing processing.

a.  casting

b.  forming and shaping

c.  machining

d.  joining

e.  finishing

6.  Give at least two examples of nanotechnology.

Examples include: micro-knives, micro-robots, and computer chips

7.  List four types of measuring devices.

Examples include: steel rule, scale, calipers, micrometers, and fixed gages

8.  Give three consequences of improper selection of materials and processes.

It stops functioning.

It does not function properly or perform within required specifications.

It becomes unreliable or unsafe.

9.  List four applications of computer-integrated manufacturing.

List four of the following:

Computer numerical control

Adaptive control

Industrial robots

Automated handling of materials

Automated and robotic assembly systems

Computer-aided process planning

Group technology

Just-in-time production

Cellular manufacturing

Flexible manufacturing systems

Expert systems

Artificial intelligence
