Augustine Wins First Round Match at Tennis Nationals to Advances to Elite Eight!
CCRI Women’s Tennis player Joana Augustine (Providence, RI) won her first match of the NJCAA Division III National Tennis Championship which is taking place in Tucson, Arizona. In the round of sixteen Augustine beat Kathryn McEntee in straight sets 6-0 6-1. With the win Joana will face Kate Bechs from Gloucester County Community College today at 11 AM local time.
In doubles action the Lady Knights will take the court for the first time today as Joana Augustine and Kathryn Finn (Warwick, RI) will face off against Abigail Conover and Melissa Lewis from College of DuPage. This match is set to start at 5PM local time.

NJCAA Tennis Nationals Day 2 Mid-day update

Augustine Knocks–off #3 seed at Tennis Nationals without losing game 6-0 and 6-0
And Finn Knocks off #2 seed 6-1 and 6-1, Sandahl wins 6-1 and 6-1 also advances
In #1 singles CCRI freshman tennis player Joana Augustine (Providence, RI via Leer, Niedersachen, Germany) keeps rolling at the Division III Women’s Tennis Nationals as she defeated the #3 seed Kate Bechs from the College of Gloucester County without losing a game in straight sets 6-0 and 6-0. So far Augustine has only dropped one game at the Nationals. Augustine will face either Brittany Williams of Broome CC or #2 seed Jennifer Tripp from Suffolk County CC at 11:30am tomorrow morning EST.
In #3 Singles Katie Finn (Warwick, RI) defeated #2 seed Lindsey Formisano from the College of Gloucester County 6-1- and 6-1. Finn will play either Abby Geronimo from Suffolk CC or Alexandra Karlgut from Broome CC tomorrow at 11:30am EST.
In #4 singles Jennie Sandahl (Falkoping, Sweden) defeated Lauren Funes of Suffolk CC 6-1 and 6-1. Sandahl will face either Blair Hufford of the College of DuPage or #2 seed Ellen Simons from Oxford College tomorrow at 2:00pm EST.
In #2 singles Liz Sutton (Warwick, RI) lost to Madeline Spratt from Oxford College 6-1 and 6-1. With the loss Sutton moves to the consolation bracket.

In #4 singles the Lady Knights Vanitda Thongsithavong (Providence, RI) advanced to the final four, however it did not come as easy as all the other Lady Knights’ matches. Vanitda beat a very tough Jessica Cybulski from the Community College of Suffolk. Thongsithavong found herself down early, dropping the first set 0-6. Thongsithavong battled back to win an epic second set with the match on the line. Vanitda won the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6) evening the match at one set apiece. In the third and deciding set Thongsithavong was able to break Cybulski serve giving her the 6-4 advantage and the right to move into the final four.
In #5 singles Jennie Sandahl (Falkoping, Sweden) defeated Lauren Funes of Suffolk CC 6-1 and 6-1. Sandahl will face #2 seed Ellen Simons from Oxford College today at 2:00pm EST.

The Lady Knights were not as fortunate in the doubles as they were in the singles portion of the event. The number #1 singles team of Joana Augustine and Katie Finn lost 6-1 6-3 to the Abigail Conover and Melissa Lewis who are from the College of DuPage.
Once again Thongsithavong found herself in the middle of another three set match, however this time she was on the wrong end losing to Ellen Simons and Lindsay Baker of Oxford College. With her teammate Jennie Sandahl the Lady Knights dropped the first match 6-2. They battled back to win the second set in convincing fashion winning 6-3. However the Knights did not have enough in the tank and dropped the third set 6-1.

Augustine wins 6-2 and 6-3 advances to Division III Tennis #1 Singles Finals in Tucson
Joana Augustine (Providence, RI via Leer, Niedersachen, Germany) defeated Brittany Williams of Broome CC 6-2 and 6-3 in the Semi-Final round of #1 Singles at the Division III women’s Tennis Nationals in Tucson Arizona. Augustine advances to play Maya Vankineni of Oxford College for the Division III Women’s Championship tomorrow Wednesday May 9th at 10:30am EST.
The other Lady Knights did not fare as well in the semi-finals. In #3 Singles Katie Finn (Warwick, RI) lost to Alexandra Karlgut of Broome CC 6-3 and 6-1. In #4 Singles Vanitda Thongsithavong (Providence, RI) lost to Alyssa Arnold of the College of DuPage 6-3 and 6-3. Finally, in #5 Singles Jennie Sandahl (Falkoping, Sweden) lost to Blair Hufford of the College of DuPage 6-0 and 6-0.

Augustine falls in Championship 6-0 and 6-1 still earns Second Team All-American
Joana Augustine (Providence, RI via Leer, Niedersachen, Germany) lost to Maya Vankineni of Oxford College 6-0 and 6-1 in the NJCAA Division III Women’s Tennis #1 Singles Championship Match. However, with her second place finish at the Championship Augustine earned Second Team All-American honors and becomes the first woman in CCRI history to make All-American for playing tennis. She joins Jonathan Delfino (1997) and Jason Garrahan (2006) who earned Academic All-American honors while playing Tennis for the Knights.
In the only other Match for the Lady Knights on Wednesday the #2 Doubles team of Jennie Sandahl (Falkoping, Sweden) and Vanitda Thongsithavong (Providence, RI) lost to Abby Geronimo and Lauren Petrolito of Gloucester CC 8-4 in the finals of the consolation round 8-4.
Overall it was and excellent showing at the Division III Women’s Tennis Championships for the Lady Knights with one Second Team All-American in Joana Augustine, and four Lady Knights making it at least to the final four: Augustine in #1 singles, Katie Finn (Warwick, RI) in #3 Singles, Thongsithavong in #4 Singles, and Sandahl in #5 Singles.
