GetIt@BU Tutorial (script)

This tutorial will show you how to use the GetIt@Bu button. This link is designed to redirect users to the electronic or hard copy version of an article and when those options are not available, the users can request content from another library using our interlibrary loan service, Illiad.

Most of the time the GetIt@BU button will be represented as a yellow rectangular button, but in some cases, such as Google Scholar, it will appear as a simple text link [show a separate tab with Google Scholar example].

Let’s begin with a search in Academic Search Complete. In the search box, type in peer pressure and teenagers. Then click the Search button.

For those articles that do not have full text or PDF included in this database, you will see the GetIt@BU button. GetIt@BU will help you discover the full text if it is available in any of the hundreds of other databases we subscribe to, or help you discover it in print in the Libraries collection. To illustrate this button’s function, let’s review the results.

In the first example, the GetIt@BU button will redirect users to another page that contains the full text for that article [highlight location on screen]. If there is an error on this page, you can click on the “Go to GetIt@BU menu” link at the top of the page.

In most cases after clicking on the GetIt@BU button you will see this GetIt@BU menu showing where to find your article. In this example the article is not only available electronically through the database Science Direct, but also available in print. By clicking on the “journal” link, you will see what years are available in the Libraries [click on link and highlight holding dates].

In our second example, the GetIt@BU button will link directly to the GetIt@BU menu page. If you see the text “No electronic full text available for this item” you will know that the Libraries do not have a subscription to this journal, electronically OR in print.

This article can be requested from another library. There is a link to “Request content from another library via ILLIAD”, which is our interlibrary loan service. Clicking on this link will take you to the ILLAD login screen.

Once you have logged in using your PODS username and password, the citation information will automatically be entered into the article request form. [login] If you haven’t used ILLIAD before, you will be asked to fill out a one-time registration form. You will receive a notification email to your Binghamton email address when the article is available.

If you need further assistance, please click on the Ask a Librarian link or GetIt@BUFaq under Library A-Z.
