Weekly Update for October 26- November 6

Language Arts
We are continuing to read the book Because of Winn Dixie. We will discuss how good readers ask questions about the title, unfamiliar words, and the author’s purpose. Good readers also ask how what they are reading connects to what they have already read or to experiences they have had. One of our goals for the next nine weeks is to answer questions about a book or passage using complete sentences with correct punctuation. As we read Winn Dixie and other read aloud books, we are discussing how to describe characters in a story. We are learning how the character’s actions contribute to the sequence of events.
Students should continue to read their chapter books at least 20 minutes a day.
Spelling: Sort 8 – We will recognize and sort homophones. Sort 9 – We will identify blended sounds of scr, str, spr, thr, shr, and squ. We will have a spelling test each Friday.
Grammar: We will continue our study singular, plural, and possessive nouns. We will also study pronouns like I, he, she, you, me, it, and they. We will also learn that verbs are action words.
Writing: We will work on paragraph writing. We will be concentrating on using correct conventions such as spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. We are finishing our opinion piece and are starting an informational writing piece.
