Materials

Each student will need to purchase:

1)a notebook with paper to be used for SPANISH ONLY. Active class participation, including note taking and homework completion is an integral part of language learning and an organized, well-kept notebook is essential. The notebook will be checked periodically for a grade.

2)a Spanish-English dictionary. While the school has some dictionaries for each classroom, it is also recommended that you purchase a bilingual dictionary for home and classroom use. These dictionaries are rather inexpensive and can be purchased at Wal-Mart or Target for about $10. Students will be allowed to use dictionaries on some in-class assignments and will not be allowed to share dictionaries during these assignments; therefore, each student needs his/her own personal dictionary.

Please remember to bring your textbooks, notebooks, and pens/pencils to class EVERYDAY!

Obtaining Work for Students who are Ill

If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to check the SchoolCenter web site to find out about missed assignments. It is a good idea to bookmark this page so that you can check it daily for assignments and extra credit opportunities. Make-up tests/quizzes will be given by appointment on Monday afternoon/ Thursday mornings. Assignments missed for these reasons shall be completed by students and are due on the day the student returns to class, unless granted additional time by the teacher. In the event of an absence, the responsibility for securing and arranging make-up work rests with the student. Students must begin making up class work and tests within two school days and will be at the teacher’s discretion and convenience.

Tutoring sessions will be held as follows: Monday afternoon 3:45-4:15/Thursday mornings from 8:15-8:45.

Classroom Code of Ethics

All students need to do their own work. If you are found to have cheated/copied on a test or homework assignment, you will receive a zero and may receive an office referral. I consider it cheating to use Google Translate or a Spanish-speaking friend to do your assignments. It is very obvious to me when this is done. I know what my students have been taught and what they should be capable of doing in the target language. If I suspect you of not having done your own work, you will receive a zero on the assignment. You may use a Spanish/English Dictionary or an on-line translator only to look up a word (noun, adjective, infinitive). You may not use it to help conjugate verbs or to translate sentences or phrases.

I want you to try to use what you have learned in class to do your work.

Breakdown of percentages:

Class Participation/Homework25%

Quizzes (Announced and Unannounced)25%

Chapter Tests/Projects50%

Final Exam20% of final grade

Class participation is very important and essential to learning a language. Although there will be times when we will use English in class, we will strive for Spanish proficiency as much as possible. Research shows that this method is the most successful in learning a foreign language and class participation grades could be negatively affected by the use of English.

Homework – the entire assignment - must be completed by the due date. It is a good idea to keep all of your homework in a section of your notebook so that you can refer to it again. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to acquire missed homework (by checking the “what you missed” folder or my website) that is due on the day you return. If you do not have it and I check it you will receive 0 credit. Even if there is no written assignment, there is ALWAYS homework – STUDY! Constant study and review is essential in mastering a foreign language.

Quizzes (announced and unannounced) will be given periodically on material that has been covered in class.

Chapter Tests/Projects will be assigned at the termination of each chapter. There will also be cumulative tests at the end of each quarter and semester.

 ¡Será un año escolar buenísimo! 
