Australian Early Childhood Development Census

Our Preps at Norman Park State School will be a part of the collection of data for the Australian Early Childhood Development Census [AEDC] in June.

The AEDC measures the developmental progress of children as they start their year of full- time school and looks at groups of children in the community, not individuals. Our Prep teachers will assess each child in their class and answer around 100 questions across 5 key areas of early childhood development.

·  Physical health and well being

·  Social competence

·  Emotional maturity

·  Language and cognitive skills [school based]

·  Communication skills and general knowledge

The data is collected online through a secure data collection system for processing and publishing the following year. No individual child will be identified. The children are not present: as the teachers use the census questions to record their observations. The data is used for policy and planning, data analysis as well as statistical and research purposes. Results are reported at the national, state and local level to help create a snap shot of early childhood development in Australia.

Participation in the AEDC is voluntary and parent/carers can notify the school if they wish to have their child opt out of the census and complete the ‘Opt Out’ form.

There is a wide range of information about the AEDC on their website www.aedc.gov.au

If you have any further questions about the AEDC, please speak to your child’s Prep teacher.

Early Entry to Prep

Children who are younger than the prescribed age for Prep may be enrolled in Prep if:

Not all children who turn 5 years of age in July will be eligible for early entry to Prep. The child must also be considered by the principal to be ready for education.
