Whatisanoperatingsystem?
Anoperatingsystemisthemostimportantsoftwarethatrunsonacomputer.Itmanagesthecomputer'smemory,processes,andallofitssoftwareandhardware.Italsoallowsyoutocommunicatewiththecomputerwithoutknowinghowtospeakthecomputer's"language."Withoutanoperatingsystem,acomputerisuseless.

Theoperatingsystem'sjob
You'veprobablyheardthephrasebootyourcomputer,butdoyouknowwhatthatmeans?Bootingistheprocessthatoccurswhenyoupressthepowerbuttontoturnyourcomputeron.Duringthisprocess(whichmaytakeaminuteortwo),thecomputerdoesseveralthings:
- Itrunsteststomakesureeverythingisworkingcorrectly.
- Itchecksfornewhardware.
- Itthenstartsuptheoperatingsystem.
InFigure2,youcanseethestart-upscreenthatappearswhenyouturnonaWindows7computer.
