INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is the leading humanities and social sciences faculty in Croatia and, with high results achieved in education as well as in research, one of the most esteemed faculties in this part of Europe.
Founded in 1669 and established as a modern academic institution in 1874, the Faculty today offers more than a 100 undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programmes.
PROGRAMME EMPHASIS
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers more than 100 study programmes.
There are two types of study programmes: single major programmes (with students enrolling in a single department, and taking most of their courses in the department) and programmes taken in combination with another major (with students enrolling in two study programmes and studying for degrees in both). The first type of programme is offered by the following departments: Comparative literature, Croatian language and literature, English language and literature, History, Information Sciences, Pedagogy, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology; the second type is offered by Archaeology, Art History, Comparative literature, Croatian language and literature, Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, History, Linguistics, Pedagogy, Philosophy, Phonetics and Sociology and the following language and literature programmes: Classic Philology (Greek and Latin), East, West and South Slavic languages, English (including Scandinavian languages and literatures), French, German, Hungarian, Indology, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish and Turkish.
Faculty offers courses of Croatian for foreign students.
CAREER PROSPECTS
Students with BA or MA degrees are qualified to pursue employment in education, science, cultural institutions, libraries, research institutes, museums, archives, tourism, media, publishing, journalism, the business sector, advertising, public relations, diplomacy, welfare services, public and local administration, various free-lancing professions (publicists, writers), etc.
RESEARCH ORIENTATION
The Faculty is committed to assuring excellence and expanding the boundaries of knowledge and insight through teaching as well as research carried out within a wide range of scholarly fields. These include the following: archaeology, art history, comparative literature, Croatian language and literature, ethnology and cultural anthropology, history, linguistics, pedagogy, philosophy, phonetics and languages and literatures (East, West and South Slavic languages, English, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indology, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish), information sciences, pedagogy, psychology and sociology. The researches carried out are on a high international level.
