ENG 100-INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSITION
Credit Hours: 3 Lecture: 3 LabGeneral Education Course:
W (Critical Inquiry, Writing Intensive)
PREREQUISITES:
ENG 96 with a grade of “C” or higher; or appropriate reading score.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Course for students who need review and supervised practice in writing before taking university-parallel composition, but whose skills are above the remedial level. The emphases are on the methods of writing well-organized paragraphs and essays, on vocabulary development and on the location and use of reference materials. Not intended for transfer.
1. / COURSE GOAL:
Develop students’ ability to think and write cogently, expressing their ideas in well-formed, lucid sentences and paragraphs.
2. / COMPETENCIES:
Upon satisfactory completion of this course, the student will be able to:
2.1 / Use basic writing tools: dictionary, thesaurus, writing reference guide and library2.2 / Write coherent, unified paragraphs and short essays using various modes of discourse: descriptive, analytic and persuasive
2.3 / Use clear styles of expression and avoid clichés
3. / STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
3.1 / Attendance Policy: Under AWC policy, students are expected to attend every session of class in which they are enrolled. For an online class, this means that students are expected to log in and participate regularly.
3.2 / Withdrawal Policy: If a student is unable to attend the course or must drop the course for any reason, it will be the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the course. The instructor will not drop him or her from the course. If the student does not withdraw from the course and fails to complete the requirements of the course, the student will receive a failing grade.
3.3 / Americans with Disabilities Act Accommodations: Arizona Western College provides academic accommodations to students with disabilities through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). SSD provides reasonable and appropriate academic accommodations to students who have documented disabilities. It is the responsibility of the student to make the Coordinator of SSD aware of the need for accommodations in the classroom prior to the beginning of the semester. Assignments: You will be required to write and revise essays which will help you to improve your writing skills and prepare yourself for college-level writing. You will be expected to post some of your paragraphs online for other students to review. By doing this, you will learn from each other.
Submitting and Returning Assignments: You will submit your assignment to the instructor in Blackboard. Your documents should be completed in MS Word, if possible. If you do not have this program, use whatever word processing software you have, and save the document in RTF format.
Instructor's Feedback: The instructor will grade each of the paragraphs you submit, and will return each assignment with a grade. The instructor will also comment on some discussion board entries and write personal emails when necessary.
Participation Policy: Students will be required to read and comment upon the work of classmates. You will be expected to take part in discussions and turn in all assignments. You will need to spend time doing online tutorials often. Trying to cram all of the required tutorials into one block of time will not help you.
