MINUTES

PRESENT: Sarah Walz, Emily Robnett, Liz Christiansen, Gustave Stewart, Robin Hayward, Jay Geisen (UI Campus Planning)

Liz mentioned that the UI’s BFU renewal application will be due next August, 2017. The group should review the application process shortly after the first of the year in order to begin gathering information.

UPDATE ON BIKE SHARE - Proposals have been received and are being reviewed.

IOWA CITY BIKE MASTER PLAN UPDATE – Sarah reported that candidate consultants for the Iowa City bike master plan were recently interviewed and a selection will be made soon. The planning process itself should begin after the first of the year. The successful consultant, along with City personnel, will put together a technical advisory committee. A bicycle advisory committee will also be appointed and will include a representative from the UI. Sarah’s hope is that the bicycle advisory committee can continue to meet after the planning process is complete in order to ensure action items move ahead. There may be some workshops or listening sessions offered during the planning process so there will be plenty of opportunity to get involved and provide feedback. The whole plan development will likely take 8-10 months. Sarah is pleased the issue of equity in bicycling will be addressed in the plan.

Jay reported that UI Facilities Management is updating its master plan. Part of that process will include the development of a bicycle master plan. The plan will be done in-house. Liz suggested adding a specific discussion on goals and objectives for next month’s meeting agenda. Emily also suggested that Jay could meet with a smaller group of the BAC before next month.

FALL BIKE CHECK-UP REPORT – Gustave reported that the September event was very successful! About 100 people attended. Multi-function tools provided by WOB and Geoff’s were given out to about 48 people. Bike check-ups were offered for attendees – brakes, gears, chains and basic adjustments were provided. WOB provided the bike smoothie machine. Gustave advertised the event on Facebook and put up flyers in UI housing.

PROGRESS ON PURPOSE STATEMENT – Gustave worked with Heidi to develop the following:

The University of Iowa Bicycle Advisory Committee’s purpose is to promote sustainable transportation and a healthy community through bicycling and advocating for improved bicycle conditions and safety by serving as a networking connection for the city, campus and county.

Emily asked that the statement be sent out to everyone for suggested changes. Please email your suggestions to Gustave at

BICYCLE QUIZ – Gustave is preparing a bicycle quiz for the upcoming health fair.

Gustave provided the quiz questions to the group for feedback. Sarah suggested adding some questions that address misconceptions or behaviors regarding bicycling. For instance, riding on sidewalks is often perceived as being safer than riding on a road, when research has shown the opposite. Sarah asked that the finalized quiz questions be sent out to the group.

The Faculty and Staff Health Fair is on November 2.
