DISSERTATION
Title: Mad Men: The Tradition of Madness in 20th Century American Poetry --
A Study of T.S. Eliot, Robert Lowell, and Frank Bidart.
Committee: Alan B. Williamson (director), Sandra M. Gilbert, Joanne Feit Diehl.
The dissertation analyzes "mad" narrators in the poetry of three prominent American poets. Using Object Relations Theory, I examine how these three poets attempt to reconcile their self-conflicting attitudes about women, religion, power, sexuality, and identity by creating male characters who are tormented by their need to discover that which is stable and permanent.
