The Amidah prayer is very ancient prayer, possibly developed ~ 450 BC by Ezra, Nehemiah (based on Hannah’s prayer, 1 Sam 2.
Began as free, unstructured prayer, the rabbis reminded that this prayer was not to be read like a letter or recited by rote, but the pray-er should always add something new, fresh. May one generation’s spontaneity NOT become another generation’s routine.

1

/ Blessed are you, Adonai, our God
and God of our fathers:
the God of Abraham,
the God of Isaac
and the God of Jacob,
the great, mighty and awe-inspiring God [Ex3:15],
the Most High God [Gen 14:19]
who bestows kindnesses,
& creates all
who remembers the good deeds
of the patriarchs
& who brings a redeemer
[Gen 14:9, Is 59:20]
to their children’s children
for the sake of His name, with love.
O King, Helper, Savior and Shield.
Blessed are you, O Lord,
the shield of Abraham.

/ You, O Lord, are forever mighty,
you Reviver of the dead,
you have the great power in salvation.
[From the end of Sukkoth until the eve of Passover,

He sustains the living with kindness,
resurrects the dead with great mercy,
supports the fallen [Ps145:14],
heals the sick [Ex15:26],
is faithful with those
who sleep in the dust.
Who is like you, O Master of powerful deeds?
Who resembles you,
King who causes death
and restores life,
and makes salvation sprout?
And you are faithful to resurrect the dead. Blessed are you, O Adonai,
Resurrector of the dead. /

BENEDICTION

Some later additions recorded in AD 900:

My God, guard my tongue from evil and my lips from speaking deceit. [Ps 34:14]

He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongues from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. [1 Peter 3:8-15]
