CDR Hiram Thompson, Jr, is a native of Thomasville, Georgia. He graduated from Thomasville High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 1983. CDR Thompson received his B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies, cum laude, from Norfolk State University in December 2006.
CDR Thompson completed Recruit Training at the Naval Training Center in Orlando Florida in July 1983. Upon completion of Apprenticeship Training, he was assigned to USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) homeported in Norfolk, Virginia in October 1983. While there, he worked as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) in the V-3 division. In 1984, CDR Thompson was advanced to Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) Third Class and in 1985 advanced to Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) Second Class and Sailor of the Quarter for the entire Air Department. CDR Thompson was selected to attend the Naval Justice School in Newport, RI, for conversion to the Legalman rating in June 1987. Upon completion of Naval Justice School, he was assigned to Naval Legal Service Office, Norfolk, Virginia. While assigned there, he served in the Trial Shop, court-reporting, personnel claims LPO and Command Services. Additionally, he was also advanced to Legalman First Class and selected as Sailor of the Year.
In August 1990, he transferred to USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) where he served as the LPO and was selected as USS JOHN F. KENNEDY’s Sailor of the Year for calendar year 1992. During his tenure onboard USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67), he was promoted to Legalman Chief Petty Officer in September 1992 and commissioned as an Ensign in the LDO (Law) Program on 1 August 1994. CDR Thompson later transferred to the Naval Legal Service Office Southwest, San Diego, California where he served as Personnel Claims Act Officer and Administrative Department Head.
In October 1996, he transferred to the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) where he served as Discipline and Brig Officer. In December 1998, he transferred to Commander Naval Air Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Norfolk, Virginia as the Assistant Force Judge Advocate until November 2001. From November 2001 until April 2004, CDR Thompson served as the Deputy Assistant Judge Advocate General for Administration and Flag Secretary to the Deputy Judge Advocate General and Commander, Naval Legal Service Command. CDR Thompson served as the Officer in Charge of the Naval Justice School Detachment, Norfolk, Virginia from May 2004-2008. From 2008-2010, CDR Thompson was stationed at RLSO Mid-Atlantic as the Department of the Navy Criminal Justice Information System (DONCJIS) Judicial Actions (JA) Module coordinator and the Consolidated Admin Support Unit OIC. Currently, CDR Thompson is serving as the Commanding Officer, Navy and Marine Corps Appellate Leave Activity, at the Washington Navy Yard in DC.
CDR Thompson’s personal awards and medals include: the Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation ribbon, Battle Efficiency ribbon (two awards), Good Conduct Award (one bronze star), National Defense Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (two bronze stars), Armed Forces Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (four bronze stars), Kuwait Liberation Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), and the Marksman Ribbon, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the Enlisted Aviation Warfare insignia.
CDR Thompson is married to Claudia E. Carruth of Lawnside, New Jersey and they have two children: Deshira and Hiram “Bryant”.
