Approximate Time Needed
5 40 minute lessons
Unit Foundation
Targeted Content Standards and Benchmarks
§112.2. Science, Kindergarten.
(b) Knowledge and skills.
(4) Scientific processes. The student uses age-appropriate tools and models to verify that organisms and objects and parts of organisms and objects can be observed, described, and measured. The student is expected to:
(A) identify and use senses as tools of observation; and
(B) make observations using tools including hand lenses, balances, cups, bowls, and computers.
(5) Science concepts. The student knows that organisms, objects, and events have properties and patterns. The student is expected to:
(A) describe properties of objects and characteristics of organisms;
(6) Science concepts. The student knows that systems have parts and are composed of organisms and objects. The student is expected to:
(A) sort organisms and objects into groups according to their parts and describe how the groups are formed; (C) record observations about parts of animals including wings, feet, heads, and tails;
(D) identify parts that, when separated from the whole, may result in the part or the whole not working, such as cars without wheels and plants without roots; and
(E) manipulate parts of objects such as toys, vehicles, or construction sets that, when put together, can do things they cannot
(7)Science concepts. The student knows that many types of change occur. The student is expected to:
(D) observe and record stages in the life cycle of organisms in their natural environment.
(9) Science concepts. The student knows that living organisms have basic needs. The student is expected to: (A) identify basic needs of living organisms;
(B) give examples of how living organisms depend on each other;
Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes
·  Create a brace map of insects
·  Identify parts of an insect
·  Compare/contrast spiders and insects (double bubble map)
·  Observe life cycle of insects (butterflies and ladybugs)
Curriculum-Framing Questions
Essential Question / What is an insect?
Unit Questions / What is the difference between insects and spiders?
Content Questions / What are the parts of an insect?
What are the stages in the life cycle of a butterfly?
Assessment Plan
Assessment Timeline
Before project work begins / Students work on projects and complete tasks / After project work is completed
·  KWL chart
·  Power point presentation / ·  Ask students what they know and want to know about insects
·  Introduce students to the unit / ·  Double bubble
·  Observe characteristics of organisms using a hand lens
·  Brace map
·  KWL chart / ·  Students will compare and contrast spiders and insects
·  Students will record findings and determine if organism is an insect
·  Students will determine parts of a whole insect
·  Ask students what they want to know about insects / ·  KWL chart
·  Student’s self directed rubric / ·  Ask students what they have learned about insects
·  TSW complete self directed rubric to assess their learning
Assessment Summary
KWL Chart - TSW fill in the K of the KWL chart of what they know about insects. Students will also fill out the W of the KWL chart to show what they want to learn about insects. Last, TSW fill out the L of the KWL chart to show what they learned about insects.
Double Bubble - TSW compare and contrast a spider and an insect.
Brace map – TSW identify parts of an insect.
Observation - TSW use a hand lens to observe characteristics of different organisms. From these characteristics, they will decide if it is an insect.
Unit Details
Prerequisite Skills
Instructional Procedures
Monday – The class will create a KWL chart on insects. Read non-fictional book about insects “Insects”. Record anything new they learned. The students will watch power point presentation about insects. The students will get their own plastic bug and look at it through hand lens.
Tuesday – Read Charlie the Caterpillar. Discuss the life cycle of a butterfly. Model the life cycle with plastic models of larvae, eggs, butterfly, chrysalis.
Wednesday - Read the Very Grouchy Ladybug. Discuss the life cycle of a lady bug. Discuss how they have symmetry on their wings. The students will observe the ladybug eggs.
Thursday - Read non-fiction book about spiders and double bubble the differences between spiders and insects. The class will create a double bubble of spiders.
Friday - Read non-fiction about insects. The students will create their own brace map of insects. TSW complete the self directed rubric to assess their learning. The class will complete KWL chart on insects.
Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
Resource Student / ·  Use cooperative grouping
·  Provide written and oral instructions in a variety of ways
·  Allow extra time for completing assignments
·  Work with a parent or a teacher's aide for assistance
·  Provide teacher-created templates to guide work
·  Provide positive reinforcement for each accomplished benchmark
·  Let them use a plastic model of an insect
·  One-on-one time with student
Nonnative English Speaker / ·  Provide them with an example of drawing to assist them on their own
·  Use cooperative grouping
·  Use visuals and illustrations to develop vocabulary and understanding
·  Encourage support from common language speakers who are more proficient in English
·  Let them use a plastic model of an insect
