*LIGHTING THE CANDLE OF PEACEMr. John Campbell

L/Today we remember Mary, innocent and powerful, sacred and scared, worried and waiting, as the Savior of all grows within her. She sings boldly when she could be meek; she bears her role in history with the confidence of a warrior; she is the beginning of a mighty revelation

as the proud are brought down and the lowly lifted up.

C/Today we give thanks for the Marys among us, who step out of the roles society has planned; unintended pioneers determined to do as God asks; fearlessly and fearfully stepping out in faith, and beckoning us to do the same.

All/On this second Sunday of Advent, we light this candle as a symbol of Mary, mother of Jesus, bearer of The Way.

*HYMNGentle Mary Laid Her Child (stanzas 1 & 2)156

*INVOCATION AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

*HYMNGentle Mary Laid Her Child (stanza 3)156

*HYMN My Soul Proclaims With Wonder Tune: Aurelia

  1. My soul proclaims with wonder the greatness of the Lord, rejoicing in God’s goodness my spirit is restored. To me has God shown favor, to one the world thought frail, and every age shall echo the angel’s first “all hail.”
  2. God’s mercy shields the faithful and saves them from defeat, with strength that turns to scatter the proud in their conceit, The mighty have been vanquished, the lowly lifted up, the hungry find abundance, the rich, an empty cup.
  3. To Abraham’s descendants, the Lord will steadfast prove, for God has made with Israel a covenant of love. Rejoicing in God’s goodness my spirit is restored, my soul proclaims with wonder the greatness of the Lord. (CCLI 1047640)
