Grade 2
The student will:
Learn to identify and use the correct vocabulary for computer components.(Monitor, keyboard, PCU, mouse cursor, shift, spacebar, enter, delete etc.)
Practice using the right little finger for the enter key.
Practice using the right thumb to press the space bar.
Practice the home row keys using the correct finger positions.
Demonstrate good posture when using the computer.
Use proper start-up and termination procedures.
Grade 3
The student will:
Demonstrate correct keyboarding position. (Back straight, both feet flat on the floor, body in front of keyboard, elbows comfortable at sides, position wrists parallel with keyboard, curve the fingers over the keys, hold hands slightly above-but not touching- the keyboard six to eight inches from the keyboard with the body in line with the "j" key)
Use correct hand position.
Use correct touch typing technique by keeping their eyes on the screen or copy and using quick gentle strokes.
Use touch-typing skills for copying simple material.
Use keyboarding skills for composing responses and simple sentences.
Use editing skills to correct copy after completion. (Navigate the page with the cursor and use the backspace or delete key to correct errors)
Be able to send their completed copy to a printer.
Use right and left shift keys of the opposite typing hand.
Grade 4
The student will:
Demonstrate correct keyboarding posture.
Use the correct Touch Typing Techniques.(Correct fingering techniques when striking all alphabet and punctuation keys)
Exhibit correct techniques when using space bar, capital/shift, backspace and enter key.
Use keyboarding skills for composing simple sentences and paragraphs.
Learn how to edit their compositions (using spell check, backspace and delete)
Learn to operate the printer after sending completed copy from their workstation.
Be able to transfer information from Alpha Smart to a workstation using connecting cable and downloading.
Grade 5
The student will:
Demonstrate correct keyboarding posture.
Use the correct Touch Typing Techniques. (Include tab key and question mark key)
Use keyboarding skills for composing complete pages of text (short stories, personal experiences, etc)
Develop rhythm and control in keying process.
Be able to edit their compositions.
Be able to send completed copy to printer and operate the printer.
Continue Alpha Smart usage.
The exit goal in keyboarding for fifth graders at Longfellow School is to be able to type 20 wpm with 90% accuracy.
