MiniCEX conducted by Supervisors
Dear Supervisor,
When completing an ECTV on an ACRRM registrar, you may be asked to perform one or more Mini-CEX assessments as part of that ECTV. Registrars on the ACRRM pathway are required to complete nine formative Mini-CEX as part of their training. The Mini-CEXs are to be completed over a two year period, by at least three different examiners. Supervisors who work in an ACRRM accredited practice, regardless of whether they are FACRRM or FRACGP are able to conduct a Mini-CEX on an ACRRM registrar.
The following information is to help you prepare and perform this assessment. Mini-CEX has been used as an assessment tool by some Universities for many years; you therefore may already be familiar with the components of the Mini-CEX if you also supervise students.
Over the two years, the nine Mini-CEX consultations must include:
- A reasonable range of types of consults, age groups and genders
- Cover a minimum of FIVE (5) physical examinations* from different body systems
- Cardiovascular
- Respiratory
- Neurological
- Endocrine
- MSK (one region)
- MMSE
- Neonatal/Paediatric
- Antenatal (first visit)
- A detailed history from at least ONE new patient or detailed updating of a returning patient
*Physical examination is to be assessed according to the outline in the attached “Physical Exam Reference Document”
Please find the following documents as part of this package. Please familiarise yourself with this information prior to your first ECTV with the ACRRM registrar.
- ACRRM Formative Mini-CEX Scoring Form – please complete one form per patient. The number of patients to be assessed as part of your visit should be discussed with the registrar at the start of the ECTV. Not all patients seen during the ECTV will be used for a Mini-CEX, it may only be one or two.
- ACRRM Physical Examination Reference – please use this document to assist you in marking the registrar’s performance in physical examination.
Please note the Formative Mini-CEX Scoring forms are in addition to the usual ECTV form that is completed per visit.
If you have any questions or concerns about completing a Mini-CEX on an ACRRM registrar, please contact the MCCC team.
Thank you for your involvement in supervision and assessment of our registrars. We greatly appreciate your experience and know the registrars find the ECTVs a very valuable learning experience.
Kind regards,
