o  February 7th, Carl and Carolyn Cagle hosted a Super bowl party at their house

o  Started a Happy Hour event held the last Friday of every month, rotating between local watering holes. Many of our club members have become really happy

MEMORABLE TRIPS

o  Dale arranged for a club trip to tour Charleston AFB in October. Visited the Aerial Port to see how cargo was processed for overseas, toured a C-17 aircraft and observed the up and down loading of the aircraft

·  Rumor has it that one of our members still corresponds with the cute pilot

o  March 20th, the Club attended the Elloree Trials for the third year in a row

CIVIC ACTIVITY

o  The club held its 16th Annual Christmas Parade of Boats

o  18th Annual Poker Run

o  Kathleen Hollowell, a Freshman at the College of Charleston, is selected as the recipient of our $2000 scholarship for 2010

o  The club donated previous years Poker Run t-shirts to Camp Happy Days

o  In April, club members attended a Santee Cooper meeting to discuss the Aquatic Plant Management Plan

o  Larry McCord, supervisor of Analytical and Biological Services for Santee Cooper, gave a talk to the club on Hydrilla. Larry asked for the boat club’s help in increasing community awareness around invasive weed

MEMBER REFLECTIONS

o  In February, the club elected to depart the Goat Island Restaurant as its official meeting place for years and moved to Georgio’s Restaurant

o  Wanda and William Johnson were introduced to the club in September by Alfred Kelley…..someone said they did not even buy a house from Alfred

o  In March, the Club voted to create a Facebook page to keep members up to date on the happenings of the Boat Club

o  Carl Cagle said “he could understand the issues better if we didn’t have so much discussion.” Well said Carl!!

o  March 26th the club attended the Elloree Trials for the 4th time

·  Lemonade, lemonade made in the shade, stirred with a spade, 5 cents a nickel, just half a dime, the boat club loves lemonade any old time

MEMORABLE TRIPS

o  June 23rd, the club had lunch at Mill Creek

o  Margaritaville Party held in June at Pump Island

o  The Thanksgiving meal was held at the Kelley’s home

CIVIC ACTIVITY

o  The club cancelled its Annual Christmas Parade of Boats due to low water levels

o  19th Annual Poker Run

o  Dwight Stewart, Chairman of County Council, spoke to the members on the history of the area and the status of the county

o  Elizabeth Blank from Manning High School is selected as the recipient of our $2000 scholarship for 2011

o  The club adopted Green Island to provide clean-up, refuse removal and general oversight as it is one of the club’s favorite places

o  Alfred Kelley and Carl Cagle were nominated as a Heroes of Conservation by the club for their continual fight against invasive weeds in our lakes and other environmental stewardship projects

·  Carl Cagle was selected as a winner by Field and Stream Magazine. He was recognized in their magazine and received a $500 reward which he donated to the Scholarship Program

Our Hero for sure

o  The club donated $1000 to cover the cost of waders for DNR officers

o  In February the club hosted a meeting of four boat clubs at the Santee Cooper Resort to discuss hydrilla problems in the lake

MEMBER REFLECTIONS

o  Alfred was instrumental in having a window was installed in the concession stand at John C. Land Landing for the Poker Run. Several people had surfaced the idea, but the near fire from cooking French fries inside was the real force that “sparked” the action

o  In June, the Club held a Boat-In at Mark and Dianne Munkittrick at their home. The theme was German

o  Pool party in June at the Cozart’s. Dale doubled the “spiked lemonade” recipe and we still ran out. Robin Rolland had something to do with the “insufficient” amount

More floating time.. Where are all the guys?

o  In September, Alfred and Ann Kelley hosted a boat-in at their home. Alfred cooked ribs

o  Also in September, William and Wanda Johnson hosted a boat-in with a Shrimp Boil

o  In October, Dianne and Wayne Simon hosted the boat-in at their home

o  December 1st, Marlene and Winston Hines and Jen and Mike Palladino hosted a boat-in

MEMORABLE TRIPS

o  The Ladies Island trip was held in May. Maria Lynn, a guest of Debra and Eddie Gleaton, was bitten by a copperhead and had to be taken Orangeburg for emergency treatment. She fully recovered

·  Oh yeah. Bob killed the snake

o  On August 11th, we had lunch at Mill Creek Landing

o  On August 25th, the club traveled to Pump Island

How do you explain this?

CIVIC ACTIVITY

o  The club held its 17th Annual Christmas Parade of Boats

o  20th Annual Poker Run

o  Nathan Smith of Goose Creek High School was selected as the winner of our $2000 scholarship for 2012

o  Our 2011 Scholarship winner, Laine Blank, finished her college year with a 4.0 GPA and participated in the Miss South Carolina Pageant

o  A work day at Ron McCollister’s proved to be very rewarding for the participating members of the boat club. Hal and Cathy White provided the lunch for the event

o  All of the leftover Poker Run t-shirts were donated to Camp Happy Days

o  In July, our guest Gene Morris from SCDNR, spoke to us about boating safety and the recent lake accidents

o  A sign was placed on Green Island indicating the GIBC had adopted the property and was responsible for its cleanliness

·  Rainy day at the horse races this year did not spoil our fun. Used Joe’s bus and a borrowed tarp to provide shelter from the weather. They’re off….. and running

o  Great time at Dale and Betty’s Pool party again in June

MEMORABLE TRIPS

o  Gang took a boat/car trip to Beaufort in September, it’s one of our favorite party spots

·  Alfred cooked his famous Beaufort stew on the dock Saturday evening, then we strolled into town for a cold brew or two or three, who’s counting

CIVIC ACTIVITY

o  Two scholarships were awarded in 2013

·  Ellen Catherine Hill of Moncks Corner High School was selected to receive our $2000 scholarship for 2013

·  Kelly Lynn Pacheco of St Matthews High School was selected to receive our $1000 scholarship for 2013

o  We participated in the Beach Sweep/River Sweep again this year. Eddie Gleaton headed up the efforts

o  21st Annual Poker Run

o  18th Annual Christmas Parade of Boats

MEMBER REFLECTIONS

o  Third all female gang of officers. Still no all male leadership. Can you say sex discrimination

o  Committee created to dig into the history of the club and document some of the memorable moments we’ve experienced thru the years. Wanda, Dale, Alfred, Carl, Debra, Jen and Winston all contributed to the project

o  Ron and Shirley McCollister were voted into the club as Honorary Members due to the fantastic work Ron did carving paddles for our club to be used as gifts and prizes at the Poker Run

The history of the boat club recorded and photographs taken from 2014 and thereafter will be maintained and filed on the Goat Island Web site for all members to reflect and enjoy at their leisure.
