TASMANIAN WATER POLO POSITION DESCRIPTION - TEAM COACH

POSITION NAME / State Team Coach (for a specific team)
EMPLOYMENT BASIS / Voluntary
POSITION DURATION / Up to 12 months (renewable upon re-application) Position starts upon WPTAS acceptance of nomination for position until completion of last tournament for State Team and completion of all required duties.
REPORTS TO / Water Polo Tasmania Board in partnership with the State Team Manager.
RENUMERATION / None. However, WPTAS will contribute $500 towards cost of the Coaches travel expenses.
POSITION DESCRIPTION / The role of the State Team Coach is to arrange quality training for a squad of athletes and coach them to achieve the best possible results at one or more major team competition.
The primary responsibilities of the State Team Coach include:
·  Training – Plan and implement effective, quality coaching to each individual athlete vying for selection in a State Team. To improve each athlete’s polo skills, tactics and game knowledge in accordance with generally accepted coaching techniques. To ensure that the training experience is positive and encouraging for continual involvement in the sport and Tasmanian representation.
·  Selection - Provide pro-active and constructive feedback to all athletes on their training performance. Explain to athletes how the selection process works. Ensure each athlete receives fair and equitable play time in the water to be able to best demonstrate their skills. Implement WPTAS State Team Selection Criteria when preparing for the nomination of representatives to The Board for ratification.
·  Competition - Prepare and manage athletes to maximise the individual team performance during major competitions. This includes athletes following appropriate warm-up and warm-down activities and that essential nutrition and re-hydration strategies are met. Effectively communicate game strategies to individual athletes and the team.
·  Communication - provide accurate, positive and appropriate communication to athletes, parents, sponsors and WPTAS representatives.
·  Refrain from discussing individual athletes or making comments on them in the presence of other players, parents or persons other than selectors and managers in.
·  Conduct themself with absolute propriety and decorum at all times and refrain from conduct which may in any way prejudice or lessen the value of services as a coach for WPTAS.
SKILLS /EXPERIENCE REQUIRED / The skills expected for this position include:
·  Hold a current Working with Children Certificate which must be sited by The Board. (The Board will reimburse any cost to attain.)
·  Coaching accreditation or previous completion of formal training as a coach (eg NCAS Level 1 or Level 2) is highly desirable.
·  Previous water polo coaching experience.
·  Previous water polo playing experience at elite level (state or national).
·  Effective time management and communication skills.
SPECIFIC DUTIES / Refer to relevant sections of the WPTAS Handbook for Coaches and Managers.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS / ·  A positive relationship has been established between the coach and each individual athlete.
·  All athletes have been treated fairly without favour and have enjoyed their experience as a member of the state team and or squad.
·  The athletes have improved their skills and knowledge of water polo as a result of training and participation. The team preformed to the best of their ability.
·  WPTAS State Team Selection Policy has been properly followed. Non-selected athletes satisfied with the communication regarding non-selection.
·  All Water Polo stakeholders of the State Team are satisfied with the professionalism of the State Team.
·  The state team have been positive ambassadors for the State of Tasmania and Water Polo Tas.
