„Land der Berge, Land am Strome” (Land of mountains, land on the stream)

That’s the beginning of the Austrian National Anthem. In fact two third of our country are mountainous; the highest mountain is the “Großglockner” (3798 m). The longest river is the Danube (Donau; 350 km). The Republic of Austria is 84000 square kilometres and there live 8,2 million people.

Austria lies in the mid-European transitional climate, and the alpine climate dominates our country. Some parts are often endangered by floods, avalanches, mudflows and frequently even droughts.

In Austria the heating period lasts from the end of October to the beginning of April.

Our nine federal provinces are distributed into 84 districts that are also split into local authorities. The biggest cities in Austria are Vienna (the capital city – 1,6 million inhabitants), Graz and Linz.

Our small country was the birthplace of famous composers, musicians, conductors, writers, actors, producers, scientists, inventors, Nobel prize winners and athletes.

Mistelbach

lies in the northeast of the federal province of Lower Austria, in the so-called “Wine Quarter”. The landscape around Mistelbach is hilly and dominated by vineyards, fields and woods.

The first settlements date back to celtic times. In 1130 Mistelbach was mentioned in documents for the first time. In 1372 Mistelbach got the market rights and even today there are four fairs and weekly farmers’ markets in the town of Mistelbach.

Mistelbach received the town charter in 1874. Being located near the borders to the Czech Republic our town has often been destroyed or occupied but always rebuilt successfully.

Mistelbach is a municipality with 9 surrounding villages and altogether there are 10.600 inhabitants. Mistelbach is the capital town of the district of Mistelbach and there are numerous public institutions, civil services, 25 schools, various institutions for adult education, a big hospital and many shopping facilities. All these facilities have made Mistelbach the centre of the “Eastern Wine Quarter”.

In the villages surrounding Mistelbach there are hardly any shops or jobs. The number of farmers living around Mistelbach has dropped dramatically and there is hardly any industry and so many people living in Mistelbach are forced to commute to Vienna daily.

The town of Mistelbach puts its focus on health subjects, Wellness, culture, spare time facilities and sports and tries to attract tourists from Vienna and the Czech Republic on a daily basis.

When walking around the town of Mistelbach one can admire sights of different eras: there is the completely restored main square with the town hall built in the neoclassical style and the baroque Trinity Column, the Church of St. Martin with the gothic sandstone Madonna and the roman bonehouse. There is also the monastery of the Barnabits with famous and valuable ceiling frescos, the “Benefiziatenhaus” built around 1503, as well as the “Schwedenkeller” (a cellar with underground ways leading to the Church of Mistelbach, built in 15. century), the baroque castle and the modern town function suite.
