Thought on Nuclear Fallout

Just a thought...yes I do that. A big issue with fallout is the irradiation of the thyroid. Radiation called radioiodine is the deadly culprit. The thyroid sucks up iodine like a sponge. Any iodine. Tocombat this radioiodine peppers and other worrywarts stock up on potassium iodine. This salt really does nothing special but take up space. The thyroid suck its up until it is full, thus the thyroid can't absorb any of the irratiated radioiodine and keeping you safe, safer.
Now my thought is that most people don't stock KI, even us survivalists. Me, I have a nuke/biological pack. No whose the worrywart. So i've thought of a way to protect ourselves even if we've bugged out already without KI. Iodine based water purification tablets. There are a few different types of iodine compounds used and different mgin each tab. Obviously KI is the best option, but iodine uptake is the key. Saturatingyour thyroid with iodine is the goal here. Tablets range from 8mg to 30mg depending on iodine compound and brand. An adult thyroid will saturate with a 130mg dose. That's 4 or more tabs per 24 hr period.
Also another reason I have a small bottle of iodine in my BOB first aid kit.
· Just an idea I figured I'd share. You guys think I'm crazy yet?

CRAZY ???
BUTYOU ARE RIGHT !!
Best thing, whether it be a Chernobyl or Fukushima or a 'Political'mistake,is to get some best Iodine. As You say, any Iodine just so the Thyroid get's the signal not to take any in as it is full. That is not crazy in my book..
I have Potassium Iodide and Iodine Crystals that I make into Lugol's solution.
Just a drop on the skin..It allows the person to determine if the body is low on Iodine as it turns Us into a living litmus papertest. If the brown stain is gone within 4-6hours, dose again.
Idea is to see a stain there most of the waking day as that shows the body is sipping it, not drinking it. Also, be aware that for pregnant and nursing Mothers, there must be stronger medical advice here, as most of the uptake in males and females is by thyroid, second place is prostate, and as women do not have this, it is the breasts that uptake it most next, hence breastfeeding concerns.
Also, if you feel like you are 16 years old again and your hair and eyebrows stopfalling out, or your voice changes, or you are 'warm' again, see your Dr. as it likely showedthat you are hypothyroid and need a glandular supplement or other attention.
In case of nuclear contamination take several drops per day. The Lugol'si make is stronger than the stuff online. If You make it at home, place it in a dark or typical brown glass dropping bottle..and, get one of those little teensy gram scales. i love mine and also awesome for weighing expensiveherbs and powders as well as grains of gunpowder for reloading in a pinch.

I keep Potassium Iodate on hand. It has a shelf life though. I still keep the old ones, but buy a new lot when the old one expires. Wondering how long after the expiration date these things are really good for......

Good natural sources of iodine for the survivalist in all of us. If on the coast, keep is the big dog of iodine. The big two where I bugout; cranberries and strawberries. There are other sources with trace amounts, but those are the big 2.
Your body needs iodine to function properly. Iodine deficiency is a big deal around the world in undeveloped countries. Back in the day developed countries eradicated this problem in their populations by adding it to table salt. Smart bastards, helping usbehind our backs.
But in an extended survival scenario iodizedsalt will run out very soon. So collecting iodine rich plants and drying them for year round consumption is a must in my book for healthy living. The biggest issue I forsee in a post apocalyptic world in regards to the need for iodine rich diet is pregnancy. Iodine deficiency in preggos causes physical and mental deformity is in young fetuses. This is serious business in my eyes. So ifplanned, iodine supplements should be in your bag and used at least the first few trimesters.
Oh yea...and sorry about the preggos thing.

I do the same and can can't bring myself to throw them out. Even if they work a little it's better than nothing I say. But here's the thing pappy, I have read a few books on the subject and I believe the actual shelf life is staggering. Studies were done with pharmaceuticals with expiration of one year. They checked the potency after 8 years and then again at 15years. At 8 years they averaged 90% effectiveness and at 15years 80%. Liquid meds did not fair well because they drop out of solution over a short time. But pills and powders did better than expected. So save that old stuff I say, because it's all a conspiracy to get you to replace good meds and buy more. Just my thoughts pappy.
