Scheme of work year 9 ICT Spreadsheets– lesson plan
Spreadsheets – invoice and order exercises
Purpose
  • revise basic spreadsheets skills, consolidate standards of presentation for printing – use of page setup options
  • printing in formula view – giving evidence of use of formulae
Progression
  • establish baseline skills and capability, build on previous ICT experience
/ Learning outcomes
  • Range of simple formulas (* + SUM %)
  • Replicating formulas,
  • Using currency formatting
  • Formatting work for printing
  • Showing formula view

Homework collecting (2 minutes)going through homework as a class (5 minutes)
Homework setting (2 minutes)
Introduction(1 minute)
The purpose of this exercise is to revise the basic use of spreadsheets including replicating formulas, printing using header and footer, page layout
Demonstration – entering text, numbers and formulas (up to 10 minutes)
First activity – invoice exercise (the one from the exam from last lesson) see finished example. In particular the use of the fill handle to fill down (or replicate) formula and currency formatting
Activity (10 minutes)
Students use worksheet to create the spreadsheet (there is a finished example available)
Demonstration page setup (see handout) (5 minutes)
Revisit printing and use of setup dialogue box in particular ensuring that the finished work all fits on one page, is changed to landscape format and has title in header and name, form and date in footer
Activity (5 minutes)
Students apply formatting and print work with title in headers and names etc in footers
Demonstration – Use of formula view (5 minutes)
Demonstrate converting the spreadsheet to formula view (Tools menu, Options, View tab, check formula box) The work will need to be reformatted and checked before it can be printed off again
Activity (5 minutes)
Students apply formatting and print work with title in headers and names etc in footers
Extension Activities (up to 15 minutes)
Order sheet – similar to invoice exercise but does not require landscape view.
Disco (differentiated core or extension) sheets – starts to explore the use of spreadsheets as a modelling tool / Resources
  • Differentiated handouts for each exercise; order, invoice
  • Handout how to place headers etc
  • Finished example spreadsheet
  • HW sheet
Lesson objectives, differentiation and assessment
All students will have completed the order exercise by replicating formulas where appropriate and printed in data and formula viewsPrinted work MUST have header and footer
Most students will have also completed the invoice exercise and printed in data and formula views
The most able students will have completed both exercises and printed in data and formula views
NC level 3
With guidance create spreadsheets and use and replicate simple formulas (+- /* and SUM) (Order and Invoice exercises)
HWWorksheet – general questions about Excel
