Summary of meeting

Trevor Shields gave a summary of the University of Birmingham’s experience in taking part in the Carbon Trust’s Higher Education Carbon Management programme. Discussion focussed on the issues that affect data included in calculating emissions. Ideas for raising awareness were also discussed.

Birmingham’s experience in setting up a pay by weight waste contract was also reviewed.

Harriet Waters gave a summary of Oxford Brookes’ Sustainable Transport Strategy. Discussion centred around various schemes to reduce car use, particularly the ‘Brookesbus’, car parking charges, car sharing. Useful data on the success of these schemes was presented

Andrea Humphries gave a review of Harper Adam’s involvement in practical renewable energy projects including energy from biomass, photovoltaics and small scale wind turbine schemes. Payback periods and potential grants were highlighted.

Potential for regional collaboration.

Sharing of carbon management data.

Sharing data on car parking policies and charges.

Multi institution involvement in recycling schemes eg glass, paper, cooking oil to biofuels etc.Multi institution pay by weight contract negotiations.

Future meetings

It was agreed to discuss the potential of a future meeting in a few months. The meeting would focus on particular solutions provided by external organisations. The agenda of an upcoming NE region meeting was noted.
