TO: Graduate students planning to take the General Exam in October 2011, January 2012or May 2012

FROM:Lisa Baratta DATE:August2011DGS APPROVAL: ______

The General Examination options are as follows:

 Option I: Choose three examination fields and take a written examination in each field.

 Option II: Choose three examination fields but take written examinations in only two. The written and the oral examination in the third field will be waived if the student demonstrates to the DGS that he or she has completed a coherent three-course sequence in that field. PLESE LIST BELOW (see Option II/Course-Out Field) THE COURSE NUMBERS, TITLES, AND INSTRUCTORS OF THE THREE COURSES YOU WANT APPROVED FOR COURSING OUT OF AN EXAM. Substitute fields are not regularly granted and must not substantially overlap with the student’s other fields. Taking this option requires that the student complete fourteen courses rather than the required twelve graded courses.

We anticipate that, in these cases, all demands for special fields would be met by taking the three-course sequence and that written exams in only the standard fields would be offered.
