WILDCATS COME FROM BEHIND TO CAPTURE THIRD PLACE FINISH IN CLASS-1A STATE GOLF TOURNAMENT

On Wednesday and Thursday, April 27th & 28th, the Wildcats and Ladycats competed in the Class-1A – State Golf Tournament in Austin. Both teams played the Lions Golf Course, with the boys starting early on Wednesday followed by the girls. On Thursday the tee times were switched. The weather conditions were good both days.

At the end of the first round, nerves and trying to hard to make things happen, caused the Wildcats to post a 381, the highest score of the year. However, when all scores were on the board, the 5th place Wildcats were only 19 shots out of 2nd, 8 out of 3rd, and only 1 behind Garden City. Happy had a 22 shot lead over 2nd place. With nothing to lose, the Wildcats started day 2 with the attitude of play your game, have fun, and see what happens. This worked well, they improved 36 strokes, much like the Regional Touranment when they passed first round leader, Robert Lee, to win the Championship by 35 strokes. This time they passed Garden City and Matador Motley County to move into the 3rd place position. They lacked 2 shots catching 2nd place Douglass.

In the medalist race, Wildcat Kenny Hrncir, made a run at the medals firing a 77 on day two. This was good enough to move Kenny into the 4th place position his freshman year at the State Tournament.

The Ladycats also had a rough first day. They posted a round of 466, which put them in 9th place in the 12 team field. With the same attitude as the boys on day 2, they improved 27 strokes, finishing in the 9th position for the tournament. Jaycie Mills was the closest Ladycat to the individual medals. She finished 12th in the 72 player field.

Both teams are young, with only 1 senior, Donavan Garcia, among the 10 players at the State Tournament. The girls, led by Jaycie and Sarah Turnbo(2015 State Alternate) gained some vauable experience on the biggest stage in the state. This group of boys were first timers on the big stage. They too gained vauable experience.

The Ladycats and Wildcats had a great season. They saw 2 players pick up and learn the game in the last 4 months. They saw others sharpen their skills while imporving their game. To qualify 2 teams to the State Tournament is awesome!!! Way to go Wildcats and Ladycats!!!
