TATAR- STUDY GUIDE- 6th GRADE COMMUNICATIONS SEMESTER 1

Students will read a short passage. They will identify which details are not strong details. They will rewrite the details to make them stronger and relevant to the passage’s main idea.

Students will rewrite sentences that only have basic facts. They will have include “seeing” and “hearing” sensory language for each rewrite.

Students will paraphrase short passages.

Students will take information and organize it into paragraphs that make sense.

Identifying independent and dependent clauses.

When I eat cheese, I get a stomachache.

When I eat cheese: dependent clause

I get a stomachache: independent clause

Combining sentences.

I eat cheese. It tastes good.

I each cheese because it tastes good.

Active and passive voice.

The ball was bounced by Mary. Passive voice

Mary bounced the ball. Active voice.

Punctuating sentences where the prepositional phrase is at the beginning of the sentence.

For the record, I did not eat the cheese.

Punctuating sentences where the dependent clause is that the beginning of the sentence.

When I am cold, I wear a jacket.

Identifying a preposition.

When I go to Prescott, I stay with my friend.

“to” is the preposition.

“with” is the preposition

Identifying words modified by prepositional phrases.

The word that to Prescott is modifying is “go”

The word that with my friend is modifying is “stay”

How prepositional phrases modify words in sentences.

In- text citations for print sources with known author:

Students will have to identify if an in-text citation is correct or incorrect. Students will have the rules available to them for a guide as well as have a correct example to look at for comparison.

MLA Works Cited Page:

Students will identify if a citation on a works cited page is correct or incorrect. Students will have the rules available to them for a guide as well as have a correct example to look at for comparison.

Thinking Maps:

Flow Map (Sequence) , Double Bubble (Compare/Contrast Map), Circle (Defining in Context Map), Multi-Flow Map ( Cause/Effect), Tree Map (Classifying)

Students will have to identify which map would be best used for a given situation.

Reading and Analyizing Informational Text:

Students will read a passage and answer questions about the information in the text.

Revising:

Students will read a passage and will answer questions on the best way to revise various sentences.
