Science and Social Studies Connections - Grade 3

Social Studies / Science / Connection
SS3G1 The student will locate major topographical features.
a. Identify major rivers of the United States of America: Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande, Colorado, Hudson.
b. Identify major mountain ranges of the United States of America: Appalachian, Rocky / S3E1. Students will investigate the physical attributes of rocks and soils.
d. Determine how water and wind can change rocks and soil over time using observation and research.. / Discuss the weathering of the Appalachian mountains verses the Rocky Mountains.
Discuss the affect the Colorado River has on the Grand Canyon.
SS3G2 The student will describe the cultural and geographic systems associated with the historical figures in SS3H2a.
b. Describe how place (physical and human characteristics) had an impact on the lives of these historical figures.
c. Describe how each of these historical figures adapted to and was influenced by his/her environment.
d. Trace examples of travel and movement of these historical figures and their ideas across time. / S3L1. Students will
investigate the habitats of
different organisms and
the dependence of
organisms on their
habitat.
a. Differentiate between
habitats of Georgia
(mountains, marsh/swamp,
coast, Piedmont, Atlantic
Ocean) and the organisms
that live there.
b. Identify features of green
plants that allow them to
live and thrive in different
regions of Georgia.
c. Identify features of
animals that allow them to
live and thrive in different
regions of Georgia.
d. Explain what will happen
to an organism if the habitat
is changed. / Discuss the human as an organism and how their habitat affects their lives – farmers in the mountains verses farmers in the coastal plain – acidity of the pine barons verses good organic topsoil of the mountains.
Discuss what crops they could grow based on their location and how that affected their habitats. Tie in with the animals that live in the different habitats and why the farmers had to move if their crops couldn’t grow because of the soil composition or the animals present.
Analogy can be made between humans moving because of lack of jobs and resources or humans getting another job and “adapting” to their environment and animals/organisms doing the same thing.
ELA3R3 The student uses a variety of strategies to gain meaning from grade-level text. The student
a. Reads a variety of texts for information and pleasure.
b. Makes predictions from text content.
c. Generates questions before, during, and after reading.
h. Interprets information from illustrations, diagrams, charts, graphs, and graphic organizers.
i. Makes connections between texts and/or personal experiences.
