Written Summary of the Work from CRW

Content/Grade Level: 6th Grade Math

Describe in detail the work that your team completed this week. Use you CRW checklist for reference. This summary will be posted, along with your video, on the ISS website to update teachers in your content/grade level on the work that was done during CRW.

The 6th grade Math Curriculum Guide was updated with the unpacking of the Common Core Standards from NCDPI. “I Can” and “I Will” statements were updated to meet the rigor of the Common Core Math Standards and the 8 Mathematical Practices. Vocabulary for Mastery and Support Vocabulary were also included in the Curriculum Guide.

Three assessments were developed during Curriculum Review Week. A Baseline Assessment was created to assess gaps from the 5th grade NCSCOS and the new 6th grade Common Core. The Baseline also covers the new 6th grade Common Core Standards with an emphasis on the standards taught in Units 1 and 2. Two Benchmark Assessments were created to assess current learning. Benchmark 1 covers Units 1 and 2 and a small portion of Unit 3. Questions from Unit 3 are referred to as “stretch” questions. This gives teachers the opportunity to see what students may know from the next unit being taught. Benchmark 3 covers Units 3 and 4 and a small portion of Unit 5. Questions from Unit 5 are referred to as “stretch” questions. This gives teachers the opportunity to see what students may know from the next unit being taught.

Vocabulary for Mastery as well as other Supportive Vocabulary was listed and organized into a document for teachers.

A sequencing document and a Unit document were created for teachers to use as a guide to what order the Common Core Standards should be taught. The standards listed within the unit are to be taught together. For example in Unit One, The Number System can be taught through Expressions. In Unit Two, Area formulas can be taught through Expressions and Equations. The idea is that the mathematics standards are not being taught in isolation but for students to see the connections amongst the math domains of Number System, Expressions/Equations, Ratio/Proportional Reasoning, Geometry, and Statistics/Probability.

Finally additional resources were provided to teachers to use in their classrooms and share with their staffs.
