Uplift Utah

Evening Concert

presented to parents by the elementary school children

Welcome – Principal or school leader

Recognize community, prevention and PTA leaders.

PTA introduction:

On behalf of the ______PTA, we would like to welcome all parents, family members and friends to our program tonight. The goal of “Uplift Utah”, First Lady Jeanette Herbert’s new initiative, is to encourage parental involvement and assist in finding resources for parents to help in improving their parenting skills. Mrs. Herbert is working with different State agencies such as “Parents Empowered and the Utah State Office of Education’s “Prevention Dimensions”, which is a part of Utah’s health core curriculum and Utah Safe and Drug Free school program. This program is recognized by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services as one of the nation’s exemplary programs. These programs along with others are concerned with the well-being of our children. The Utah PTA is proud to be a partner in Mrs. Herbert’s initiative and we would like to thank all those PTA volunteers and school staff members who have helped to prepare for tonight’s program.

Mrs. Herbert’s opening statement:

Kindergarten student: We are learning in our class that we are all different but that’s what makes us special. We like it when you tell us that we are doing a good job or how great you think we are, even though we already know. So just keep telling us.

Kindergarten: I Like Being Me

1st grade student: Parents, it’s good when you to give us rules and make sure that we follow them. Please be our parent first and our friend second.

1st grade: Two Heads are Better than One

2nd grade student: We are learning that certain things like drugs and alcohol can hurt our brains and make it so we can’t think and learn as well. We need to take care of our bodies so we can grow up and do great things.

2nd grade: Take Care of Your Body

3rd grade student: We are learning to be nice to everyone and not make fun of them because they may be different. Parents, please talk to us about this to make sure we are not bullying or being mean to others.

3th grade: Sticks and Stones

4th grade student: We know it is important to be honest with our friends and with our parents so others can trust us. Please help us to be honest and let us know that we are always better off telling the truth.

4th grade: Honesty

5th grade student: There are times when friends may try to get us to do something wrong, even though we know it is wrong. It can be hard sometimes to say no to them. Help us learn how to stay strong and make the right choices. Then we can be a good example to others.

5th grade: I’ve Decided

6th grade student: Parents, we want you to tell us not to drink and take drugs. Please keep talking to us and reminding us how dangerous it is and how strongly you are against us using drugs and alcohol. Statistics show that the number one reason kids don’t drink and do drugs is parent disapproval. So please keep on our case about it!

6th grade: Hot to Not

I like being me

And my friends help me see

I’m somebody special

I like being me

And my friends help me see

I’m somebody special

Happy as can be

I feel good inside

When I do what’s right

I help my friends and family

I like being me

I like being me

Sticks and Stones

Music and Lyrics by Steve James ©1999, B.M.I.

(Verse 1)

Well you can call me names

You can play your games

You can do whatever you want to

But it’s not gonna hurt me

So leave me alone

You’re gonna find inside

I’m stronger than sticks and stones

(Verse 2)

Well, if you stare me down

I’ll just turn around

You can do whatever you want to

But it won’t affect me

That’s my comfort zone

You’re gonna find inside

I’m stronger than sticks and stones

(Chorus)

Sticks and stones

Stronger than sticks and stones

Sticks and stones

Stronger than sticks and stones

You’re gonna find inside

I’m stronger than sticks and stones

(Verse 3)

I’m not gonna break

I’m not gonna take

Anything at all inside me

That is going to hurt me

Now or when I’m grown

You’re gonna find inside

I’m stronger than sticks and stones

(Chorus)

You’re gonna find inside

I’m stronger than sticks and stones

I’ve Decided

Music and Lyrics by Steve James © 1997, BMI.

(Verse)

If by chance someone comes along

And asks you to do something wrong

I’ll turn around I’ll walk away

It doesn’t matter what they say

(Chorus)

‘Cause I’ve decided to say no

If they don’t like me

That’s the way it goes

‘Cause I’ve decided

I’ve decided to do what’s right

It doesn’t matter

If it’s day or night

‘Cause I’ve decided

(Verse)

If by chance someone comes along

And asks me to do something wrong

I’ll turn around I’ll walk away

It doesn’t matter what they say

(Repeat Chorus)

To drinking and drugs… I say no

To violence and crime… I say no way

To drinking and drugs… I say no

To violence and crime... I say no way

I’ve decided to do what’s right

It doesn’t matter

If it’s day or night

‘Cause I’ve decided

I’ve decided

I’ve decided

Hot To Not

Music by Steve James, Lyrics by Steve and Lisa James © 2000 B.M.I.

(Verse 1)

I think I feel a chill is in the air

I look around at people everywhere

Some do things they’re not supposed to do

Some come face to face with me and you

(Pre-chorus)

And if they ask you to do something wrong

Just look them eye to eye

And tell them you’ll never ever go along

(Chorus)

Turn around and tell them to get lost

That kink of consequence is never worth the cost

Life is short so give it all you got

And when you make decisions know it’s hot to

Hot to not

(Verse)

If you find you’re sitting on the fence

You don’t know what to do

The think in future tense

It’s your choice, completely up to you

Whatever lies ahead

Depends on what you do

(Repeat Pre-chorus, Chorus, 1st Verse and Chorus)

The Leaders of Tomorrow

Music and Lyrics by Steve James © 1997 B.M.I.

(Verse)

The leaders of tomorrow

All across the land

How I long to see them

Standing hand in hand

The builders of the future

Starting on their way

To bring a brighter day

(Chorus)

We are the leaders of tomorrow

We are the builders of the American Dream

We’ll raise our voices so the whole world can see

Because of you America we’re free

(Descant)

I’ll give back to America

Who gave so much for me

A land of freedom and opportunity

Build a bridge to the future

With hope and liberty

And I’ll give back to America

Who gave so much for me

(Repeat Chorus and Descant together)
