Last Week’s Meeting- Wine Tasting with Reilly’s
Last weeks meeting was held on the Thursday to fit in with the wine tasting event arranged by Glenys Jardine when members from the club visited this winery on the Sunday after the District Conference in Adelaide. The whole of the cub had the opportunity to enjoy the product from this company. Justin Ardill the winemaker is also a cardiologist and developed his winery at Mintaro in the Clare Valley the home of one of his ancestor’s Hugh Reilly a shoemaker from Ireland arrived in the tiny township of Mintaro in the Clare Valley in 1856. Over the next 10 years, Hugh converted the stone barn that had been his home into a cottage. Reilly's Cottage served as the local Cobbler's Shop in the centre of the bustling town, which had boomed with the discovery of slate in the area.

In 1993 starting from humble beginnings where the first vintages of wines were processed on the front porch of the Cottage Justin soon developed a hobby into a thriving business due to his commitment to consistently produce premium quality wines. The winery has steadily grown over the years, quickly outstripping the capacity of the cottage, and production was moved to a state-of-the-art facility in nearby Leasingham in 2000. The vineyards, located in Leasingham and Watervale are non-irrigated, depending solely on rainfall. They yield limited quantities of small, delicious berries which are hand picked to ensure only the premium fruit is selected to go into our winemaking process.
The fruit is crushed at the Leasingham facility and fermented in open vats, prolonging contact of skins and juice. The fermented wine is then basket-pressed. This is a slow process providing last 'pressings' which contribute to creating fine wines of intense colour and flavour. The red wines are then stored in new, premium quality French and American Oak hogsheads for one to two years. These wines have won many awards, including trophies and gold, silver and bronze medals at major wine shows. We have also received critical acclaim from prominent wine writers and publications including James Halliday, Jeremy Oliver, Robert Parker Jnr and Winestate. /
One of the Reilly’s B & B Cottages at Mintaro in the Clare Valley of South Australia
Some of the proceeds from the sale of last week’s wines went to fund raising

These wines include 3 of my favourites. Reilly’s Watervale Riesling which is crisp with ripe citrus lime and floral flavours. These rieslings have considerable cellaring potential up to 12 years, and become more mellow with age, taking on luscious, honey overtones. This Riesling has many awards but I note it was acclaimed as Austalia’s best value riesling by a group of American reviewers and has a number of rave reviews form the USA. The second is the Reilly’s Grenache Shiraz sourced from an 85 year old vineyard in Leasingham. We saw the vines last year and retaining these vines when everyone was pulling out their Grenache was inspired .This wine is crafted from dry-grown fruit and has a mix of spicy, ripe stone fruit aromas. It has won many medals at major wine shows, and accolades both domestically and overseas. Finally there is the Barking Mad Range including the Sparkling Mad NV Shiraz a great wine for the midday barbeque.

/ Unfortunately the Editor to the bulletin was in Sydney when all this tasting was going on. I am told that all were impressed and that the gourmet pizza’s etc finished of the evening nicely. Many thanks to Glenys for organising the event and to Justin Ardill for giving us his time.

If you have the opportunity visit the Clare valley (above), Mintaro and Reilly’s Winery. If you have the time stay at their B&B you won’t be disappointed.

RELAY FOR LIFE – Fund raising for Cancer Research

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th November

WOW! I didn’t think we could top our effort from last year. Well we did. We had the most participants attending the event we have ever had – 44, including 3 friends of Sue and Russell Warmington - Harvey Lane, Daryl and Jenni Henry, who between them walked 51 laps. Of course it wouldn’t be the same if the Moorfoot kids didn’t help with the rugged midnight to dawn shift. Not only did Sarah and Gavin walk 56 laps, Sarah had a friend Jess Leanne with her who walked 40 laps.

Fueling up at the pit stop / From the set up at 11.00am on Saturday, with help from Bruce Symcox, Kevin Thomas and Russell Warmington, the 24 hours was full on. We had a fantastic BBQ on Saturday night attended by Suzanne Murphy, Glenys Jardine, Graeme and Marion Moorfoot, Bob and Lyndy Davis, Dick and Pam Tregear, Roger and Rosalyn Wilson, Ann and John Lynch, Bob and Bev Hoskins, Maria Pires, Pat and John Dear, Russell and Sue Warmington, Wayne and Judi Willoughby, Alison Pennington and Robert McQuade.
To help get the night walker’s through, Robert McQuade brought his fantastic Gluwine that was enjoyed by all. This is becoming a tradition. It did help as we had some rain on Saturday night.
We had 11 people to walk through the night, Ann and John Lynch, Bob and Lyndy Davis, Graeme, Sarah and Gavin Moorfoot, Jess Leanne , Russell and Sue Warmington and Glenys Jardine. To accommodate all we had four tents. As well as the sleepovers, Bruce and Libby Atkinson arrived early morning about 2.00am to lend support. Pack up consisted of Mark Harrington and Russell Warmington, while Alison Pennington kept the lap counter moving. Roger Wilson completed the most laps 44, as far as records go this could be the most ever by a participant representing our club, next were Sarah Moorfoot and her friend Jess Leanne who both completed 40 laps each. For the record we walked 777 laps, or 310Km and the 39 walkers were – /
