TEXT:NorthStar 4: Listening and Speaking, 4th edition, by Tess Ferree and Kim Sanabria

ATTENDANCE: Your attendance is very important, particularly because most of the work you do in this class will consist of communication activities in the classroom. You will be responsible for everything that is discussed in class and written on the board concerning the lessons. Attendance will be checked at each class session and you will be allowed a total of 3 absences if they do not interfere with your assigned work or quizzes. If you are absent more than 3 times, your grade may be lowered. Five absences may result in your being dropped from the class. Being late for class 3 times is equivalent to one absence, so please make a point of arriving on time! You may not make up any quiz or oral presentation that you miss!

CLASS WORK: Each class session will include listening activities, assignments to check your listening comprehension, oral practice activities, and group activities. There will also be written work that is related to the listening and speaking topics. These written assignments will be collected and graded.

HOMEWORK: Homework assignments will include previewing and reviewing materials in the text book, doing listening assignment online, collecting information related to the text book topics, and planning oral presentations. All homework assignments and presentations must be prepared by the date that they are due.

TESTS: There will be a chapter test at the end of each of the chapters in the text book. There will also be an oral presentation for your midterm and final, as well as a multiple choice final exam.

GRADES: Your final grade will be based on the following formula:

class participation - 30%

chapter tests and midterm - 30%

homework and in-class written assignments - 20%

final exam and presentation - 20%

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
