Aim

To co-ordinate and deliver a basic skills programme, to include training and guidance, for Crisis Skylight Oxford learners.

The role

The Basic Skills Tutor is responsible for all aspects essential for the delivery of high quality accredited basic skills classes including initial assessment, lesson planning, suitable learning materials learner support, teaching and the preparation of learners for assessment.

Background

Crisis is the national charity for single homeless people. We are dedicated to ending homelessness by delivering life-changing services and campaigning for change.

Crisis Skylight, our award winning and accredited education, training and employment services, offer practical and creative workshops with formal learning opportunities that lead to qualifications and finding work. Crisis has Skylight centres open in London and Newcastle and operates outreach services in Birmingham and Edinburgh. In 2011 we will extend our services to Merseyside and Oxford.

Crisis Skylight Oxford will be located in the Old Fire Station in the centre of the city. It will offer practical, creative and vocational workshops; accredited learning opportunities; and tailored employment programmes. It will include a social enterprise Skylight Café, open to the public.

The Old Fire Station building will also accommodate a range of flexible arts spaces which will be run by an independent arts company. They will work closely with the Skylight team to provide opportunities for homeless people, the professional arts and wider communities to meet, learn, network and participate together.

Dimensions

  • The Basic Skills Tutor will deliver approximately 20 hours of learning per week to groups consisting of no more than 12 learners.

Circumstances

  • £23,000 for 35 hour week, or £18.400 pro rata for a 28 hour week.
  • 28 or 35 hours per week (4 or 5 days) week.
  • A significant degree of flexibility is required in delivering the service, evening and weekend work will be required at times.
  • Based at the Old Fire Station in Oxford.
  • Skylight Oxford will incorporate outreach provision.
  • Crisis Skylight Oxford will run four terms per year. Term breaks will be used for ad hoc events such as Job fairs, award ceremonies, taster sessions, end of term performances and preparation for the next term.
  • A satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau is required for this role.

Principal accountabilities

Recruitment and assessment

  • To recruit and select learners on the basis of need.
  • To undertake initial and formative assessment of learners, and respond accordingly.

Teaching and learning support

  • To teach and support learning in accordance with best practice for the client group.
  • To plan, reflect and review each learner’s programme on a regular basis.
  • To prepare and use suitable and good quality learning materials.
  • To prepare schemes of work and lesson plans in accordance with standard practice.
  • To establish and maintain standards of conduct with and for the learners.
  • To support the learners in receiving and upholding their entitlements.
  • To adhere to departmental policies and procedures that meet requirements for the effective running of Crisis Skylight Oxford.
  • To ensure all learning activity aids the progression of individuals and future development plans drawn up.

Certification and quality assurance

  • To assess the learners’ progress and attainment against the standards set for the programme.
  • To make and keep appropriate assessment records and track and inform progression.
  • To liaise as required with internal moderators and other representatives of awarding bodies.
  • To maintain and provide required records for accountability purposes.

  • To develop and share teaching and learning materials with the team.
  • To develop and maintain an understanding of the charity’s work and the needs and circumstances of homeless people.

Person specification / Essential / Desirable
Qualifications and training
The applicant must either hold or be working towards a practical teaching qualification i.e. adult basic skills, ESOL, PGCE, Cert Ed or equivalent. / 
Member of the Institute for Learning / 
Knowledge and experience
Experience of working with challenging behaviour and people with complex needs / 
Experience of delivering literacy, numeracy and / or ESOL in an adult education environment. / 
Proven experience of engaging vulnerable, disengaged or hard to reach adults in relevant educational, employment and training programmes. / 
Developing of teaching and learning materials and the tracking and monitoring of individuals progress. / 
Experienced in the preparation and planning of assessments and individual learning plans. / 
Skills and abilities
A capacity both to work on your own and as part of a team together with a willingness to reflect upon and develop ones own practice. / 
Able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups using a variety of media / 
Able to establish effective interpersonal relationships with a range of people / 
Ability to keep accurate and up to date records, sharing information as and when appropriate / 
