Heather McCollin, Senior Tutor at Field Studies Council, Flatford Mill, Suffolk

Having studied Environmental Science at Lancaster University, the outdoors was always going to be where Heather ended up. With a background in teaching (secondary school Science and Chemistry), she missed working with young people when she went back to her studies in 2012. So on graduating from Cranfield University, she started to look for jobs where she could incorporate both teaching and the great outdoors.

Heather currently work for the Field Studies Council and is based at Flatford Mill Field Centre in Suffolk, where she teaches a range of subjects to all different ages and aims to inspire young people to connect with their environment and enjoy being outside. She loves the variety you get from teaching ages 7 years up to adults, and swapping from Geography to Biology to Environmental Studies and everything in between.

She was lucky enough to be involved in the Outdoor Learning 4 All partnership project between schools in Southend, UK and Ogre, Latvia www.ola-regio.com and is excited to have another opportunity to make some international links through outdoor learning.

Field Studies Council, FSC, is an environmental education charity providing informative and enjoyable opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to discover, explore, and understand the environment.FSC believes that the more we understand about and take inspiration from the world around us the more we can appreciate its needs and protect its diversity and beauty for future generations. Each year over 140,000 people experience FSC through our UK wide network of locations.

Flatford Mill is on the River Stour close to the Suffolk-Essex border. The Centre buildings, particularly the Mill and Willy Lott's House, feature in many paintings by John Constable.

The centre offers visitors of all ages a much sought-after sense of tranquillity to complement a unique learning environment. The rich mosaic of lowland landscapes, wildlife habitats and places of historic interest in this beautiful part of East Anglia are all reflected in the Centre's wide-ranging programme of environment and art-based courses. Well known for it's environmental performance, and the staff's desire to develop various sustainability projects as well as educate visitors about ecological issues, over 300 residential and day activities are offered each year for people of all ages.

Brian Sandford, The Shoebury Society

Brian is a former Headteacher and Education Director for one of the oldest City of London Trading Companies. He has a degree in Geography, specialising in Historical Geography and Geomorphology. It is the former which has created a deep interest in the Shoebury Garrison, a unique military installation, now abandoned by the military and re-developed for private housing. However, all the buildings and installations are protected and remain as a unique example of English Victorian life and architecture.

The whole area is part ofthe area covered by The Shoebury Society, formed to promote the conservation of it, and Brian has been the Secretary of the Society for nearly 30 years. His Geography teaching recognised the importance of children learning away from the classroom and he has developed both written material for use by teachers visiting the area, and a Garrison Heritage Trail Walk, which can lead to many different work projects for children, as designed by their teachers.
