3) Updates

a)SGUK
The next Exhibition that will be attended is next week at the Health and Safety Event at the NEC from Tuesday to Thursday. Mike and Cathy look forward to meeting members on stand E80 should they be there. The local Groups will be promoted and hopefully some new members will be recruited.
A new initiative being promoted in the Safety Dialogue Theatre called LOcHER (Learning Occupational Health by Experiencing Risk) and is linked to apprentices. The Health Risks at Work Campaign will also be promoted with talks at 10.20 each day. Should you wish to volunteer some time if you are there we would be grateful even if it is only for one hour.

b) NWRA

Next year’s Conference is in the early planning stages. Some changes will be made, including moving the Conference to a new venue, the Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Centre, some 4 miles north of Barton Grange. The theme is ‘Back to Basics II’ utilising topics that were left unused last year. The date is 13 September and further details will be on the website as and when they become available. The cost is £80 per person this year, next year may bring a reduction in costs as the Conference has been losing money for some years now.

4) Presentation

Beforeintroducing RogerPalmerMike indicated that our Salford University M.Sc. Dissertation winner Catherine Dent, would also make a presentation about the ageing workforce.

Roger indicated that he was standing in for Terry Broughton. He said that he had experience in various fields including managing fuel gases at BOC and running safety training courses.

He then talked about hot work safety and emphasised that it was necessary that proper checks are made on any equipment before use. It is essential that the correct regulator is on the correct cylinder to prevent accidents and bad reactions.

Visual inspection is important, and it is also necessary to keep written records of checks.

Mike then thanked Roger and presented him with a small gift from the members.

5) Dissertation Winner
Catherine Dent then gave a presentation on her Dissertation ‘Managing an ageing Workforce in a Manufacturing Environment’. Due to the nature of the business at Heineken there is a mixed range of ages amongst the staff.
She described the various processes used in obtaining the necessary information including a literature and data review.

Life expectancy is rising thus there are various challenges affecting the workplace.

These include: Physical, Sensory, Psychological and Accidents, all of which have a part to play.

The study group involved workers in the brewing and kegging departments. This included an anonymous survey.

85% of the respondents believed that early retirement was beneficial. The differing lengths of shifts required a different skill set. Brewery workers were less confident that they would still be fit at retirement age.
See presentation for further info.

Mike then thanked Catherine on behalf of the Group.

6)Correspondence
The usual leaflets, magazines and DVD’s at the back of the room are all available for you to take.
Mike also advertised the IOSH East Lancs meeting the next day which is the Mike Sagar Memorial Lecture at the University Technical College, Burnley, from 12.30 for lunch. Paul Blanchard will give a talk entitled ‘Life after an Accident’.

Mike had also received a letter from our oldest member, Lawrie Manning who had joined the Group in 1957. He has held several roles in the organisation and had finally decided that the time had come to resign. Mike then circulated a card for those present who wished to sign. Lawrie has been unable to drive for some time now and thus cannot get to meetings. The Group would like to wish him well.

7) Members Question Time

There were no questions raised by the members. Mike took the opportunity to remind those who still had to pay their subs that the date for closure of renewal was this coming Friday 18 March. Although we have 100 paying members only 54 have actually renewed. We have had 10 resignations to date and losing more is likely. We are attempting to keep the Group running as there is still lots of potential.

Date of next meeting – Wednesday 25 May2016, 2.00p.m.atSt. Antony’s Centre, Eleventh Street, Trafford Park, Manchester, on Proper Planning for CDM in a Historic Building, presented by James Woolgrove, James Woolgrove AssociatesThe meeting closed at 3.55 p.m.
