Video III Syllabus

Welcome Back! The purpose of this course is to expand the student’s knowledge of broadcast journalism and digital editing. Each student will take on more responsibilities than the Video II students, and improve his/her shooting and editing skills.

Expected School-wide Learning Results (The 8 conditions)

The course will cover all of the school’s ESLRS, with a particular focus on leadership, responsibility, creativity, and FUN. We are responsible for presenting the announcements daily and professionally which involves all of the ESLRS. The following sections cover a variety of California Content Standards for the Arts.

Part I: Students will refine their moviemaking skills:

  • Students will master Final Cut Pro 10 or Adobe Premiere.
  • Students will continue to explore After Effects.
  • Students will improve their DSLR cinematography skills.

Part II: Students will take leadership roles for the live announcements.

  • Students will act as producers for the live announcements.
  • Students will master the use of the live broadcast equipment.
  • Students will monitor the talent and the video II engineers.

Part III: Students will learn career related skills through serving clients.

  • Students will be responsible for making videos for the school and learn to use creativity while meeting the video needs of the guidance office or the principal or other staff members.

Part IV: Students will develop a personal style and gain advanced proficiency in communicating an idea, theme, or emotion.

  • Students will make several creative movies each semester based on themes.
  • Students will watch professional movies with these themes to get ideas.

Required Materials

1. Students need to bring their notebooks from last year or a blank notebook.

2. Please bring something to write with every day.

3. An 8GB (or larger) SD class 10 memory card. Make sure it says class 10 on it. The student store has some for between $10-$15. See me if you won’t be able to buy one.

4. Please bring the signed permission slip next time.

5. Please buy yourself a 4-8 gig USB drive, if possible.

Homework

Homework for this course involves shooting video for 10-15 minutes outside of class each week. Students who do not have cameras can tape at lunch or after school with the school’s cameras. We want to make the announcements and our journalistic pieces as visually interesting as possible with footage of sporting events, clubs, dances, nature, etc. Meeting deadlines is crucial in the work world, particularly in TV and film. I will give you lots of deadlines, and you must work hard to get your groups together to shoot and edit on time. Students who do not do their share of the planning, shooting, or editing will earn a lower grade than the rest of the group regardless of the quality of the final product.

Grading Policy

Students will be evaluated on their use of class time and their ability to work in teams as well as on the quality of their work. Students will be evaluated on the following criteria:

1. Responsible use of equipment and class time. No wandering, internet surfing, or doing homework for other classes.

2. Meeting deadlines and contributing equally to every project.

3. Completion of written work.

4. Ability to cooperate with group members and me.

5. Enthusiasm, promptness, and attendance.

Behavior Policy

A. WHS has adopted the following behavior policy that will be enforced in this classroom:

  1. Respect personal space: touching that is not welcomed is inappropriate.
  2. Respect differences: no name calling, put downs, or slurs. This includes language, behavior, or gestures that are obscene, offensive, or abusive. This applies to behavior in class and on tape.
  3. Respect property: ask before using someone’s things. Do not write on or destroy an individual’s property or the school’s property.

B. The success of this course is highly dependent on technology. To be a member of this class you must show that you respect the equipment. Any tampering with the computers or damaging of the equipment will begin the process of dropping you from the course.

Attendance Policy

Much of the work that we do in this class is difficult to makeup. We will spend every period filming and editing. If you are absent, you directly affect your group’s ability to progress, and you do not earn the day’s points for working on the announcements. Students who are absent must see me outside of class within the week of return to get makeup work. I will not give out makeup work many weeks after it was due.

Tardy Policy

The WHS attendance policy says that students who are late will earn a detention for every period that they are late starting the 4th time you are late for class.

Cell Phones

If you want to find music or photos on your cell phone for a project, you MUST ASK ME FIRST. Otherwise, any time I see your cell phone, I will lock it up until the end of the period. If this happens more than twice, I will turn your phone into the office.

Continued cell phone use in class will lower your participation grade.

Please tell your parents not to call or text you during the school day. In case of an emergency, your parents should call the school. 367-9750, the extension for I-4 is 40904 to do the announcements.

Teacher Contact

I am happy to talk to you outside of class about your grade, make up work, performance, school or life, in general. I will be in my room every day at lunch. I will be in F-14C during periods 1 and 6. The best way to contact me is through my email: .

You will enjoy success in this class if you plan to work hard, cooperate well with all different kinds of people, and enjoy thinking creatively about making movies.

Video Announcements Guidelines Contract

Dear Video II and III Students,

By being in this class, you are accepting the responsibility of preparing videos and live shows for the entire school to watch. As a result, it is imperative that you follow the rules for presenting appropriate material for a captive audience. You have rights as journalists, but the viewers have more rights because they cannot get up and leave if they are offended. As a result, we have to be extra sensitive to our audience’s sensibilities.

I have neither the time nor knowledge of current slang to police every lyric, every gesture, or every reference in your videos. Therefore, to be in this class, you must agree to do your very best to insure that your videos follow these guidelines:

Videos made for the announcements and for class (including lyrics) may NOT include:

Swearing, flipped fingers, sexual gestures, weapons, violence, drug or alcohol references, shots of people really or pretending to urinate or defecate, bullying, fighting, clothes that break the dress code, insults, accents that make fun of groups, humor that puts down individuals or groups, and any behavior inappropriate for school.

I, ______, agree to abide by these rules. I understand that breaking these rules may result in being given alternative assignments, being suspended from class, or meeting with the vice principal.

Video Release AgreementVideo Production II and IIIGwen Sidley

Dear Parents, (Please sign by both stars)

The Video Production IIand III class will be spending the second semester of the year studying world cinema. Each student will choose a country and research that country’s cinematic history and watch three movies from that country. Some of the most distinguished movies from foreign countries have an “R” rating. I try to steer the students toward the films that have artistic and technical merit and away from films with gratuitous violence, drugs, and sex. However, there are some great films, for example Tsotsi from South Africa or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon from China, that have brief scenes of violence or nudity that I will discuss with the students in order that they understand how these scenes contribute to our understanding of the cultures they reflect. By putting a check mark next to “A” or “B” below, please indicate whether you give permission for your child to see these films or whether you prefer that your child to be exempted. Students exempted from such videos will be required to complete alternative assignments. Should you have any questions regarding this policy, please email or call me.

Please check A or B:

______A. I give permission for my child to view class videos.

______B. I prefer that my child be given alternative

assignments when “R” rated videos are shown.
