Course Description
This course was designed by the Georgia Department of Education to build upon mathematics concepts introduced in previous grades, as well as, introduce new concepts that will be needed for future mathematics courses. The goal of this course is to develop and/or strengthen students’ understanding in the areas of Rational Numbers, Linear Equations in One Variable, Plane Figures, Properties of Symmetry, Properties of Geometric Shapes, Solid Figures, and Analyzing & Representing Data. In this class, students will use a variety of methods to explore, model, communicate, and apply mathematical concepts.

In preparation for the end of the year Georgia Milestones Assessment, students should also expect and prepare for assessments that mimic the types of questions that will be asked. All assessments throughout the year will include assessment questions of this nature.

Please call or email me if you have comments or concerns. It is the student's responsibility to inform you of his or her grades. Individual student progress can also be tracked through Parent Portal. Please use this resource to remain informed of your child's weekly grades. Interest and encouragement at home in student activity and progress is always beneficial to student performance at school.
Student Responsibilities: It is the responsibility of ALL students to
ü Follow classroom and school rules and procedures as outlined by the teacher and the Turner Middle School Student and Parent Handbook.
ü Complete and submit all assignments in a timely manner.
ü Maintain an organized notebook.
ü Learn vocabulary and be able to apply the mathematics being taught.
ü Ask good questions to learn and to eliminate misconceptions.

Parental Responsibilities: It is the parent’s responsibility to
ü Reinforce the importance of abiding by school and classroom rules regarding behavior and academics.
ü Communicate with the teacher via email, letters, conferences, and/or phone calls.
ü Stop saying, YOU hate math. Doing so gives your child a valid reason to hate it and not do it.
Try changing your language to: "I struggled with math but never gave up!"
ü Check student’s agenda nightly for teacher notes and homework assignments.
ü Sign up for Remind to receive emails or texts about class and approaching events such as parent nights and tests.
ü If there is no teacher assigned homework have your child work on www.ilearn.com/login to brush up on math skills and study the current vocabulary.
After-school Tutoring from 4:00-5:00 pm on Wednesday by appointment.
Assignment & Grading Policy
All assignments are due at the time designated by the teacher. Late assignments will be accepted with a valid excuse (i.e. excused absence from school, emergencies) in a timely manner. It is the responsibility of the student to make up assignments within 3 days after returning to school and schedule a time to make-up a missed quiz or test. Assignments greater than 10 days late will not be accepted for a grade.
It is not our policy to give extra credit, however it can possibly be given at the teacher’s discretion. Students are expected to maintain sufficient grades if all assignments are turned in as well as completed to standard.
Grade Weights: Grades will be computed according to the following weights:
Summative Assessments (CDA’s/Common Assessments) – 50%
Classwork/Projects – 40% (This includes daily warm-ups, assignments completed in class, notebook check) Class participation 5%
Homework – 5%

as well as the Georgia Online Assessment System, accessible from the Douglas County website under Student Resources. Two other great websites are: www.learnzillion.com and www.khanacademy.org where parents and students can learn/practice by topic and standard.
